We Finally Have a Hamilton Trailer for the Musical's Disney+ Release

The long-anticipated film recording of beloved Broadway musical Hamilton is heading to Disney+ on July 3. Unlike many hit musical-turned-movies, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s theatrical brainchild, inspired by Ron Chernow’s 2004 biography of the Founding Father, is coming to the streaming platform in its original form. The minute-long trailer was released on Sunday:

The film was recorded in 2016 from performances with the original cast. “It was basically a three-day film shoot with the best-rehearsed cast in the history of the movies, because we’d all been doing the show for a year at this point,” Miranda told Good Morning America on Monday.

"No one can predict the way a work is received, and the way Hamilton has been received has surpassed everyone's wildest dreams, but our biggest issue has always been accessibility,” Miranda said of the musical’s forthcoming transition to the screen.

The coronavirus upended Miranda’s year a bit. Hamilton originally had an October 2020 release date, and the film version of another one of the playwright’s hits, In the Heights, was scheduled for a June 2020 theatrical release – it’s since been pushed to June 2021.

“That's a movie-theater movie,” Miranda said of In the Heights. “But I couldn't leave you one summer without at least one musical, so I was very grateful that we were able to move up Hamilton so that everyone can see it next week.”
