I Finally Found a Firm Mattress That Doesn’t Give Me Hip Pain — And Now I’m Sleeping Better than Ever

A White and light wood bedroom with white shiplap covering the walls

Two months ago, I was in desperate need of a mattress. I had just moved into a new apartment and was making do with sleeping on just my mattress topper, which, albeit fluffy, was not enough to prevent aches and pains all over my body. Couple the hardness of the ground with the January chill that had seeped into the floor underneath me, and I felt like I was waking up each morning with rigor mortis. I knew that no matter how many blankets and yoga mats I layered under my sleep surface, I would not be able to achieve a good night’s sleep without a proper foundation. (Before that, I’d been sleeping on an ultra-firm mattress that also gave me hip pain, so it wasn’t much better.) The only light I could see at the end of the tunnel was The Company Store’s new mattress, which was expected to arrive at my door in a week or so. When the editor-loved bedding and bath brand reached out with the testing opportunity, I naturally jumped at the chance to try the exciting new offering. Now, more than two months later, I couldn’t be more satisfied with my decision.

Design Features That Stand Out

The Company Store’s new mattress is a hybrid mattress. In other words, it’s made of multiple layers of fiber and foam designed to simultaneously provide comfort and relieve pressure. Specifically, two layers of gel foam add support, while hypoallergenic latex conforms to the body. A layer of cotton in between two layers of coils additionally makes the sleep surface feel stable, and a layer of steel coils contributes just enough firmness to help you achieve a deep sleep. Finally, the mattress also boasts an antimicrobial layer of copper, silver, and gel comfort fibers.

Also of note is that the mattress is available in six standard sizes, and you can add either a 5-inch or 9-inch foundation to your order. In case you’re not familiar, this is essentially a slatted wooden box covered with cloth that prevents your mattress from sagging.

And even though you’ll cover your mattress with a fitted sheet, you can’t ignore its lovely exterior. Hand-tufted and sporting the brand’s signature floral motif, this is no doubt one of the prettiest mattresses on the market. A quilted top of wool, silk, and cashmere further makes this bedroom staple breathable and moisture-wicking, so you won’t overheat throughout the night.

How It Performed

Before I get into the reasons why I love this mattress — and there are many — I want to make a couple of disclaimers. This mattress is made to order, meaning it can take up to two months to arrive at your home. So don’t do like I did and sleep on an uncomfortable surface until you receive it. Also, each size is listed as having a height of 15 inches on the website, but my full-size mattress is 20 inches tall. I don’t know why, but suffice it to say I had to replace all but one of my fitted sheets because most of them could no longer accommodate my bed, and finding new ones that do fit has been a challenge. The height also makes the mattress quite a bit heavier than your standard 8-inch or 12-inch mattress, which is something to keep in mind if you’re a frequent mover.

That being said, the mattress has four side handles to help you set it up. My roommate and I were able to position it on the floor, and then I managed to get it onto my actual bed by myself once my bed frame arrived. I have a basic steel frame and have found that I don’t need a mattress foundation for it. Also, because the mattress is so heavy, it doesn’t really slide around on the frame, which is nice. Now that my bed is fully set up, I love the tall height. The mattress is high up off the cold floor and feels so cozy to climb onto. It also just makes my bed look fluffy and substantial, not flat and hard.

Of course, the best feature of this mattress is the unmatched comfort it provides. Its firmness level is classified as “luxury firm” on The Company Store’s website. I don’t know what that means, but I’d say it feels medium-firm. In other words, neither too soft nor too firm, but a sweet spot in between. Research suggests that a medium-firm mattress is ideal for helping to avoid and combat back pain, and when we spoke to Dr. Nnaemeka Echebiri, a physiatrist at the Hospital for Special Surgery specializing in spine and musculoskeletal medicine, he confirmed this. “I think that the biggest thing as far as the literature is concerned that is correlated with back pain is the firmness of the mattress,” Dr. Echebiri said. “When people have switched from softer mattresses or firmer mattresses to medium-firm mattresses, the trend was that their back pain improved and they got better quality sleep.”

The first month, I slept on my mattress without adding my cushy mattress topper, and it was delightful. After having slept on both spring mattresses and insufferably firm foam ones, I can honestly say this is the best surface I’ve ever slept on. It even rivals hotel beds. The tufted top both hugged my body and allowed it to sink in just enough. When I did eventually add my mattress topper (mainly just to free up the space it was taking in my closet), the result was heavenly.

What We Loved

  • It’s comfortable: Whereas before I was involuntarily waking up before my alarm from stiffness and pain, I now repeatedly hit snooze to prolong the bliss I experience every night.

  • It’s made of premium, long-lasting materials: Although the mattress is splurgy, it’s just as stable and durable as advertised and will last for years as a result. In any case, after one night atop its comfortable, supportive layers, you’ll never want to part ways with it.

Good to Know

For an extra $200, you can add White Glove Delivery to your order. This service includes delivery and unpacking of your mattress. The new mattress will also be positioned for you, and your old mattress will be removed.

Should You Buy The Company Store Mattress?

If you have the budget for it, yes. Of course, it’s always good to test mattresses in-store before buying them, but all in all, this is a solid one-size-fits-all pick for back, stomach, and side sleepers.

  • Heavy and stable, so it likely won’t budge or sag even without a foundation.

  • Beautiful on the outside, and supportive on the inside.

  • Breathable; won’t cause you to overheat.
