After a bit of a hiatus, Final Fantasy XIV‘s free trial is once again available to all new players. Both free trials and sales were halted in 2021 due to overwhelmed servers following the launch of its Endwalker expansion. Now, it seems the team is finally ready to let new players jump back into the action.

The Final Fantasy XIV free trial is more than just a sampling of the adventure. It lets you play through the entire base game without dropping a dime. It also includes the Heavensward expansion and includes no playtime restrictions. In other words, you’re getting hundreds of hours of content for free. If you decide Final Fantasy XIV is worth your time, you can pick up a monthly subscription and the latest DLC.

Square Enix had resumed sales of Final Fantasy XIV in January but has only just revived its generous free trial. The Endwalker expansion proved to be a bit more popular than expected, with servers overloaded with players and lengthy queues to jump into the game. Now that the dust has settled, you should be able to hop into the action without a long wait and without dropping a dime.

When announcing the free trial’s return, Naoki Yoshida, producer and director on Final Fantasy XIV, also mentioned plenty of new content would be arriving within the next few months. This includes new dungeons and a graphical update in patch 7.0.

Final Fantasy XIV‘s free trial can be found on both the PlayStation Store and its official website. If you end up a fan, you can pick up a 30-day subscription for $13 and the latest Endwalker expansion for $40.

The Best Free MMORPGs Beyond Final Fantasy XIV

While Final Fantasy XIV is without a doubt one of the most popular MMORPGs on the market, it’s technically not free. It boasts one of the most generous free trials in the genre, but you’ll eventually have to pay for additional content and a monthly subscription. Thankfully, there are plenty of other MMORPGs that are either free-to-play or offer a similar free trial – here are a few to consider:

  • RuneScape: Some locations, skills and quests are locked behind a monthly subscription.

  • Old School RuneScape: Some locations, skills and quests are locked behind a monthly subscription. Paying for RuneScape membership also gives you access to Old School RuneScape membership.

  • Guild Wars 2: Base game playable for free. There’s no monthly subscription, but you’ll need to pay for its expansions and DLC.

  • Lost Ark: Entire game playable for free, with optional subscription and premium cosmetics.

  • Albion Online: Entire game playable for free with optional monthly subscription.
