Final Fantasy 7 Ever Crisis Finally Has a Release Date

Final Fantasy 7 seems to be Square Enix’s golden goose, capable of exciting fans and raking in cash whenever the company rolls it out. It’s done a lot with the game since it first launched in 1997, with sequels, prequels, remasters, and remakes, along with a host of external media like films and novels.

One of the more interesting things Square has announced for FF7 though is a free-to-play episodic remake of the entire saga — from Before Crisis and Crisis Core all the way up to Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus. So far it’s only been confirmed for mobile devices, but we imagine it could come to other platforms – maybe the Nintendo Switch – eventually too.

It’s called Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis, and it actually had a closed beta just last month. Square Enix says that it was very well received by beta players, with 90% of the players who participated giving it a 4- or 5-star rating. They did have some complaints though, such as a messy and difficult-to-read UI, something that Square says it plans to fix for the full release of the game.

So when is that full release? Well, it’s a lot sooner than you’d think. Final Fantasy 7: Ever Crisis is set to be released on Android and iOS next month, on September 7, 2023. Potential players can pre-register now on both platforms, and bonuses will be given out depending on how many people register.

Now, it’s important to note that it won’t have all of the content available at launch. As mentioned above, it is episodic, which means that new content will roll out every month or so. Square Enix probably intends for Ever Crisis to run for a couple years, like some other mobile Square games in the past (looking at you, Kingdom Hearts UX). Expect it to be a slow burn.

It’s also worth noting that because it’s a free-to-play game, there will be microtransactions, and because it’s 2023 and publishers like money, those will come in the form of loot boxes. Loot boxes in Ever Crisis will give costumes, which offer passive buffs, and weapons, which are obviously used for attacking and getting stronger.

As far as we know, there are no competitive aspects, so it’s not “pay to win”, but just keep in mind that it does go full gacha game, and luck will very much play a part in how strong you are.
