Final Fantasy 16 Is Getting DLC And A PC Port

The latest game in the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy 16, was released earlier this year, and while it didn’t set the world on fire, it did attract positive reviews and sold over 3 million units in the week following launch. While there have been some reports that it didn’t quite hit the milestones Square Enix was hoping for, the publisher isn’t giving up on it anytime soon.

During a panel at PAX West over the weekend, producer Naoki Yoshida finally let the cat out of the bag with a video message. Yes, Final Fantasy 16 is getting ported to PC, and yes, there will be two sets of paid DLC for the game.

A PC port of the game was actually hinted at a long time ago, before the game was even released. All the way back in March – three months before launch – Yoshida said that the Final Fantasy 16 PC port was a long way away, asking people to buy and play the game on PS5 instead, where Sony has an exclusivity agreement for the game.

At the time, he said the team would “like to release a PC version at some point, so that as many people as possible can play the game,” which makes sense but feels a bit empty when the game isn’t coming to Xbox. No release date or window has been given for Final Fantasy 16 on PC, but it’s likely it’ll come after the upcoming DLC.

Speaking of, yeah, Final Fantasy 16 is getting paid DLC. We have absolutely no idea what it’s about, how big it will be, or how much it will cost, but it will cost something, and it will come eventually.

It’s actually a bit of a surprise that it is getting DLC though. Sales performance aside, Yoshida told Game Informer a few months ago that there were no plans for DLC:

“It’s a one-off game,” Yoshida said, “We’re asking players to pay the full price for this experience, and so we want an experience that’s going to equal the amount of money that players are going to be paying and we want them to have satisfaction equal to what they paid or even more than that.”

Like the PC version, we don’t know when the DLC is coming. What we do know is that more information on both of them will be revealed “before the end of the year.” Maybe later this month at Tokyo Game Show?
