In my humble opinion, there's really no bad time of the year for a scented candle—I love how a waft of fig leaves turns my apartment into a summer oasis, or the way notes of apple and cinnamon instantly make a room seem autumnally cozy—but when it comes to holidays, there's just something special about the season that practically demands an especially decadent candle. For years, I've had one particular go-to, the Nest New York Holiday Candle, and the festive season doesn't truly start for me until I open that red and gold box and light those wicks for the first time.

The fragrance carries all of the classic notes you'd expect from a holiday candle, with mandarin orange standing in for the classic citrus, and spice notes of clove and cinnamon underpinned by vanilla and amber. However, the scent gets an extra boost from the unexpected combination of pomegranate—which lends a lush, berry-like quality with the tannic bite of a good cabernet sauvignon—and pine, which tempers the gourmand heart of the scent with an aromatic quality that lifts the whole experience to another level. The effect is a can't-put-your-finger-on-it fragrance that nonetheless immediately speaks (as its name would suggest) to the season.

Of course, being from Nest, the candle puts out plenty of scent during its burn time to perfume a whole room pleasantly (without being so overpowering that you can't enjoy a drink or a bite to eat.) And, even better, like all of their holiday collection, the vessel is done up in geometric patterns of metallic gold, so it doubles as decor even when not in use. For that reason, I tend to gravitate toward the 76.8 oz four-wick Grand candle—which not only contains enough wax to burn the whole season long, but also makes a dramatic visual statement amidst holiday decorations—but for those with less maximalist tendencies, the fragrance is also available in four smaller sizes as well, in addition to reed diffusers, room sprays, hand soap, and even pods for the Pura home fragrance diffuser. Whatever option you choose, your home is sure to smell luxurious all holiday.
