Festival of Spring at Paine, and more can't-miss events in Oshkosh

OSHKOSH – Spring is in full bloom and on display at the Paine Art Center's annual Festival of Spring May 18.

The Encore! Handbell Ensemble will hold its spring concert while the Oshkosh Community Players put on their next production at The Grand.

Paine Art Center & Gardens’ Festival of Spring will be May 18 at 1410 Algoma Blvd. The free event will run 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The festival includes the Paine’s annual spring plant sale and vendors offering original art, crafts, plants and garden supplies.

Admission to the Paine mansion and gardens will be free that day. Included will be an art activity for kids, food and live entertainment. Paine members will be admitted to the Spring Plant Sale at 8 a.m. and get a 10% discount on plant sale purchases.

Also taking place May 18 is the Oshkosh Garden Club Plant Sale. The sale will run 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Oshkosh Public Museum, 1331 Algoma Blvd.

The sale offers a selection of locally grown plants suitable for Wisconsin gardens, along with used gardening tools and supplies. Volunteers will be present to offer guidance and answer questions about plant care and gardening techniques. Proceeds will support the Oshkosh Garden Club.

2. Handbell Ensemble to present spring concert, 'Our Favorite Things'

Encore! Handbell Ensemble will present its spring concert, “Our Favorite Things” May 17. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at Algoma Boulevard United Methodist Church, 1174 Algoma Blvd.

This year marks the group’s 15th anniversary. The program features a range of music from original works for handbells, music arranged for bells and chimes along with pops selections.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door.

3. Celebrate National Bike to Work Day May 17

May is National Bike Month and National Bike To Work Day 2024 is May 17.

Sean from Winnebago Bicycle will greet bikers from 7 to 10 a.m. May 17 at the Opera House Square, 315 N. Main St. He will air up tires, lubricate chains and do minor adjustments for free. New Moon will provide coffee while your bike is worked on.

4. Oshkosh Community Players put on comedy at The Grand

Oshkosh Community Players will present “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” May 23 to June 1 at The Grand Oshkosh.

The play description says the story follows six mid-pubescent youths competing for the spelling championship title. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.

The play is rated PG-13 for mild adult themes.

5. Fashion show with pop-up shopping set for May 21

The Spring onto the Runway Fashion Show and Pop-up Shops event will take place May 21. The event begins at 5 p.m. at Venue 404, 404 N. Main St.

The evening features a fashion show with pop-up shopping, heavy appetizers from Pilora’s, dessert from Sweet Jules and a specialty drink. Plus, the opportunity to win gift certificates from participating businesses.

In addition to Pilora’s and Sweet Jules, participating businesses include Blonde Russian, Boutique by Urban Esque, Soiree, Brinkley's Boutique, uBloom and Your Boat Club.

Tickets are $45 and are available at any of the participating businesses.
