Fendi Gives the Couture Cat Eye a Bold New Runway Spin

There's just something about the '60s. The decade's combination of free-form and mod feels forever resonant—particularly when aesthetics are tweaked to play up au courant trends. At this afternoon's Fendi Couture show in Paris, makeup was a striking fusion of retro and futuristic, catapulting the iconic cat eye into the realm of the present tense.

To further Sam McKnight's parade of slick, era-inspired bouffants, Peter Philips edged models's eyes in a thick rimming of kohl pulled into extended graphic wings. But a subtle shift saw the makeup skew that much bolder thanks to what it internationally lacked. Along with a white flick within the wing which offered the illusion of negative space, liner traced below the lower lashing stopped just short of the inner corners, resulting in an artfully broken encasement. Paired with dewy skin, rosy lips, and spidery lashes, the revamped staple is one worthy of an evening out in the City of Light—after all, nothing combats rising temperatures like an infusion of eye-catching cool.
