Felton And Mary’s BBQ sauce gets new fans in Beaverton

BEAVERTON, Ore. (KOIN) — It’s lunchtime at Beaverton’s Mountainview Middle School, where the offerings of the day are better than the Sloppy Joes of their parents.

The barbecue sauce came from Portland’s Felton and Mary’s Artisan Foods.

Tory Campbell, whose grandparents were Felton and Mary, told KOIN 6 News they’d been living in this area for a number of years and “were compelled to do something radical and take the foods we’ve been cooking in our backyard — and people have come over to enjoy — and let’s share it with the city.”

Felton and Mary owned Campbells’ Barbecue on Southeast Powell and 87th for 18 years. After they sold the restaurant, Campbell started the food company to keep their legacy alive — and he made sure to include the barbecue sauce.

Campbell was excited when the Beaverton School District called to ask if they could use the sauce for a lunch offering as part of their Feature Fridays.

“I was, like, ‘That would be dope, let’s do it!'” Campbell said.

Charity Ralls with the Beaverton School District’s Nutrition Services said they “get to introduce new items to students to get them to try new things and also help support small, local companies, small growers utilizing farm-to-school funds.”

Part of the goal is to expose kids to locally made foods their parents might buy.

And the Sloppy Joes are a hit with the middle schoolers.

While one student said, “It’s not bad,” another said, “It’s really good. I give it a 9 out of 10.”
