Feline stowaways find new homes 400 miles away in Maryland

(QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Some very fortunate felines are with new families today after traveling more than 400 miles from North Carolina tucked away in the underbelly of a car.

The tiny kittens had a lot to say after their harrowing journey.

“We didn’t understand how a cat would leave their kittens there without us seeing it,” explained Alex Grzybowski.

Gryzbowski found the little guys in his driveway on Friday, May 17th in Jarettsville, Maryland.  As it turns out, they’re Tar Heel state stowaways.

Gryzbowski said, “I heard a meow and I thought that it was just me hearing it from earlier and I realized that it was actually in my mom’s car who we had visited from Hamlet, North Carolina. So, she had driven up the entire way with them in there.”

By “in there,” he means in the underbelly of his mom’s car.

“It took me like 30 minutes of just dragging my body underneath, trying to figure out where it was, “ he recalled, “and I had to pull the third one out of like the exhaust shield.”

The fearless felines were holed up underneath the Honda CRV, traveling nearly 430 miles and 7.5 hours from Hamlet to Jarrettsville.

Grzybowski took them straight to the vet.

He said, “They didn’t know how old they were. I think they were less than a pound and they had these like eye infections that you see a lot, where they have to peel the stuff off, but as far as that, they’re in great shape.”

He also has a pretty good idea as to how they got there.

“Once we found the third one in her car, she was like, ‘We have a ton of stray cats in Hamlet,’” he said, “Then she found two cats just looking around her car when she got home on Sunday.”

Now, things are getting even better for the well-traveled trio.

Grzybowski said,“ I’m going to take two of the kittens and my friend’s going to take the other one so that all the siblings can kind of just be together. We’re very much animal people, so I mean, it was very hard to just even say no to all of them, really. They’re so resilient for what they went through as little kittens.
