'Fear Street Part Two: 1978' Has a Summer Camp Slasher Soundtrack For the Ages

After taking a stab (ba dum tss!) at the '90s with Fear Street: 1994, Netflix's brand new horror franchise returned for the second installment in its homage-heavy, R.L. Stine-based trilogy with Fear Street Part Two: 1978. Where the first movie in the series felt a bit like a mixed bag tribute to movies like Scream and the aesthetic of Stranger Things (with a '90s soundtrack to boot), the second movie felt like a more-focused homage to the camp-set slashers of the '70s and '80s, like Sleepaway Camp and the Friday the 13th franchise.
Along with that era's horror cinematic influence also comes that era's appropriate music, which as anyone who's seen movies of the era would be able to tell you casts quite the wide net. From rock anthems like "Carry on Wayward Son" by Kansas to punk like "Cherry Bomb" by The Runaways to (of course) a couple songs by David Bowie, there's quite a few different musical offerings in the mix here.
But the soundtrack also isn't just showing off a fun mixtape. Each of the musical cues in Fear Street Part Two: 1978 also shows off an understanding of the film; the songs are placed where they need to be, and thematically add to whatever drama (usually involving someone swinging an axe) is unfolding on our screen. And bookending the movie with one of the most famous covers of all time ("The Man Who Sold The World" by Nirvana) and its original version ("The Man Who Sold The World" by David Bowie) is just great stuff. No notes on that.
