The Food and Drug Administration is cautioning pet owners against feeding their dogs Performance Dog frozen raw pet food purchased after July 22, 2019, as it "represents a serious threat to human and animal health." The warning comes after two samples taken during a routine inspection of a New Jersey manufacturing facility tested positive for Salmonella and L. mono.

Of the two samples tested, both of which are produced by Bravo Packing, Inc., one had been distributed to stores. The sample of Performance Dog raw pet food lot 072219 tested positive for both Salmonella and L. mono. The product involved comes in two-pound plastic pouches, though that is the only identifier the brand is able to give at this time.

Lot codes are not printed on the plastic pouches, so customers won't be able to identify whether or not the product they purchased is affected. Because of this, the FDA recommends pet owners exercise caution and throw this product away if it was purchased after July 22 or if they are unsure of the purchase date. (The second frozen raw dog food tested, a beef variety, tested positive for Salmonella but had not been distributed to stores yet.)

Handling the contaminated dog food could be harmful for humans and feeding it to dogs could be harmful to the animals. The FDA recommends owners throw out any affected product in a secure container so wildlife can't get into it in the trash, and to thoroughly clean freezers and/or refrigerators where it was stored.
