FDA Announces Kimchi Recall Over Listeria Concerns

A kimchi recall has been announced after routine tests found potential listeria contamination. The Food & Drug Administration announced the recall on July 14 after FDA sampling in a Chicago facility found the issue.

The company, 5000 Years Foods, distributed its cabbage kimchi product to various retail stores and customers nationwide. Products in question were sold in five-gallon plastic tubs and 128-ounce, 64-ounce, 32-ounce, and 16-ounce quantities. For those unfamiliar with the product, kimchi is salted and fermented vegetables, often cabbage and radishes, that is popular in Korean cuisine.

Jars included in the recall have code numbers 09052021 through 09252021, these numbers can be found printed on top of the lid. A variety of products from 5000 Years Foods including sliced cabbage kimchi, whole cabbage kimchi, baby napa kimchi, among others, are included.

Listeria is a bacteria that can cause the foodborne illness called listeriosis which can be particularly harmful to children, elderly people, and other individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms and nervous system symptoms like loss of balance or headaches.

If you have kimchi in your fridge right now, it's best to play it safe and check the label to see what brand you have in your possession. In the case that your kimchi is from 5000 Years Foods, dispose of it immediately without consuming it.
