Over Dancing with the Stars' 30+ seasons, viewers have enjoyed intense competition with a side of showmance. Did Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten actually have a fling? When did Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd get married—and which pro dancer was he engaged to before that? Whether it was a casual fling, a relationship, just a rumor, or the couple is married with a family, keep reading to learn about the cast members who have been linked on DWTS.
Jenna Johnson and Val Chmerkovskiy
The two professional dancers dated briefly in 2015 before going their separate ways. But after rekindling their romance in 2017, Val and Jenna tied the knot in April 2019.
Nikki Bella and Artem Chigvintsev
Nikki Bella confirmed her relationship with former professional dance partner, Artem Chigvintsev, in January of 2019. The couple fell for each other during season 25 in 2017, and are still going strong. They welcomed their adorable son, Matteo, in 2020, and are getting married in fall 2021.
Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten
The Bachelorette star and pro dancer lit up the dance floor in season 28, with their passionate dances taking them all the way to first place. Hannah and Alan continued to spark romance rumors for a short time even after the show wrapped, but both have since denied ever dating. They reunited for an Instagram Live chat in 2020, with Hannah saying they are "still great friends."
Mario Lopez and Karina Smirnoff
When Mario Lopez and professional dancer Karina Smirnoff were partnered together for season 3 of the show, the couple — and the audience — felt an attraction almost instantly. The pair dated for a little over two years before splitting in 2008.
Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd
Both Peta Murgatroyd and Maksim Chmerkovskiy have had their share of showmances during their time as professional dancers on the show. But in 2014, the two decided to partner up together — and were engaged the following year. The lovebirds welcomed their son, Shai Aleksander, in January 2017, before marrying a few months later in July.
Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough
The Pussycat Dolls singer and dancing pro were crowned the winners of season 10. As they celebrated their victory, people began to wonder if their chemistry extended off the dance floor. After the season ended, they were seen together, but nothing was ever confirmed.
Brian Austin Green and Sharna Burgess
This happy couple was brought together by DWTS fate. The actor was in talks to appear on season 29 with Sharna as his pro partner, but had to pull out — leaving the Australian dancer to tango with Jesse Metcalfe instead. Good thing, because Sharna has a strict "no dating partners"rule for herself. After Brian's appearance fell through, the two became close, and have remained inseparable ever since.
Kym Johnson and Robert Herjavec
When the Shark Tank investor partnered up with professional dancer Kym Johnson, it was love at first waltz. The couple sparked romance rumors right from the start of the season (after being seen getting cozy at the premiere after party) and their relationship continued after the season was over. They tied the knot in 2016 and welcomed twins two years later.
Alan Bersten and Alexis Ren
The model (Alexis) and professional dancer (Alan) drove fans wild when they shared a lingering kiss on air while competing on season 25, and later confirmed that they were dating. But their romance was short lived: Alexis announced their split on Instagram in December 2018, just a few months later.
Val Chmerkovskiy and Amber Rose
Even though it was Val's brother, Maksim, who was partnered up with model Amber Rose during season 22, Val was the one she hit it off with. The pair dated for five months before calling it quits.
Cheryl Burke and Drew Lachey
The couple proved to be the best on the dance floor, taking home the Mirrorball Trophy in season 2. As far as off the dance floor? The couple maintains that their relationship was strictly platonic, with Lachey's rep telling US Weekly the rumors were "completely false" that the two had an affair.
Maksim Chmerkovskiy and Erin Andrews
The dance partners made headlines during season 10, not only for their performances, but for their apparent chemistry outside the ballroom. However, as you've probably already learned with DWTS fandom, sometimes it really is just a rumor.
Gleb Savchenko and Elena Samodanova
Together, Gleb Savchenko and Elena Samodanova were an international power couple of Dancing with the Stars, as Gleb competes in the U.S. series and Elena has appeared on both the Australian and Russian counterparts. Sadly, the pair announced they were divorcing after 14 years of marriage in 2020. They share two daughters together.
Chrishell Stause and Gleb Savchenko
As Chrishell and Gleb were going through separations — and eventually divorces — with their significant others, they leaned on each other during season 29. The Selling Sunset star and her pro partner “definitely had a flirty relationship"while on the show, an insider told Us Weekly. However, they never entered a serious relationship, with their spark seemingly fading after the show ended. The two still occasionally interact through Instagram, so it seems that they remained friends.
Chrishell Stause and Keo Motsepe
While things didn't seem to work out with Gleb, Chrishell found herself another DWTS man to date. She and pro Keo had a nearly three-month fling that ended in major drama. Shortly after their breakup in early 2021, she posted about hearing rumors that "made me question if [Keo] could even order a coffee without lying." Yikes!
Emma Slater and Sasha Farber
When and where would be the ultimate place for two professional dancers to get engaged? A live taping of Dancing with the Stars, of course. After dating for five years, Sasha asked Emma to marry him on the dance floor and the whole cast came out to celebrate when she said "Yes!" The two married in 2018.
Hayley Erbert and Derek Hough
Hayley joined the DWTS troupe in season 21, met Derek Hough (another pro dancer on the show at the time), and the two hit it off. The pair have been together since 2015, and although there is much buzz about the couple getting engaged, nothing has been formally announced just yet.
Peta Murgatroyd and James Maslow
The pair, who were matched up for season 18, apparently went on a date before the premiere, but nothing ever came of it. Throughout the season, both partners kept the record straight on their friendship, with James telling PEOPLE that he was flattered by the rumors, "But really, we're just here just to dance."
Sabrina Bryan and Mark Ballas
The former Cheetah Girl showed everyone she could strut like she meant it on season 5 of Dancing with the Stars—including her dance pro, Mark Ballas. The couple began dating during the competition, but ended things shortly after the show wrapped.
Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Karina rebounded from her split with Mario Lopez by sashaying into a relationship with fellow dancing pro, Maksim. The couple got engaged in January of 2009 after dating for six months, but parted ways later that year.
Janel Parrish and Val Chmerkovskiy
Val and Janel fueled relationship rumors throughout season 19 with their flirty banter and close friendship outside of the ballroom. By the finale, the gossip died down and no relationship was ever confirmed.
Carlos and Alexa PenaVega
The former child stars, who married in 2014, competed against one another on Dancing with the Stars during season 21. During the season, Alexa was paired up with pro Mark Ballas and Carlos was paired with pro Witney Carson. The Big Time Rush singer and Spy Kids actress now have three children together.
Mark Ballas and Shawn Johnson
In season 8, gymnast Shawn Johnson and pro dancer Mark Ballas took home the Mirrorball Trophy. According to rumors, they may have won each other's hearts, too. The duo never confirmed or denied their relationship.
Joanna Krupa and Derek Hough
Fans hoped a romance would brew between model Joanna Krupa and pro dancer Derek Hough when they were paired together in season 9 of DWTS — but the relationship never turned into anything more than rumors.
Mark Ballas and Cheryl Burke
According to Cheryl Burke, the dancing world is extremely small and everyone's dated everyone at some point—and apparently, the DWTS contestant and Mark Ballas are no exception. Cheryl said on the Allegedly With Theo Von & Matthew Cole podcast, "I think we tried to have fun...Ya know, stuff happens."
Chad Johnson and Cheryl Burke
With a show that sees as many "showmances" as Dancing with the Stars, you can't blame the rumor mill for turning during season 10 when dancing pro Cheryl Burke and NFL player Chad Johnson were paired up together. The two had incredible chemistry, with Cheryl later admitting to a brief fling with her former partner — but nothing more.
Derek Hough and Shannon Elizabeth
The American Pie actress and her dancing pro began dating during the show's ninth season, and their relationship lasted well over a year before the two parted ways as friends.
Julianne Hough and Chuck Wicks
When Chuck Wicks took to the dance floor for the premiere of season 8 of Dancing with the Stars, he and his dancing pro, Julianne Hough, were already dating. The two were unable to make it all the way in the competition — and similarly in their relationship. Julianne began dating Ryan Seacrest shortly after their split at the end of 2009.
Cheryl Burke and Matthew Lawrence
Although Matthew wasn't technically a contestant on the show, the duo met through Matthew's brother, Joey Lawrence, who competed with Edyta Śliwińska on season 3 (Cheryl was a pro dancer on the show at the time). The couple dated for over a year before calling it quits in 2008. They rekindled their romance in 2017 — almost 10 years later — and announced their engagement the following year. The couple said "I do" in May 2019.
Brant Daugherty and Peta Murgatroyd
While nothing official came of it, pro dancer Peta Murgatroyd and her season 17 partner, Pretty Little Liars actor Brant Daugherty, were reportedly seen making out at an event in 2013. Either way, the pair didn't make it far in the competition — or in a relationship.
Mark Ballas and Pia Toscano
So Pia Toscano didn't *technically* compete on Dancing with the Stars, but the former American Idol contestant did perform on the show while then-boyfriend, Mark Ballas, starred on it. The couple first began dating in April 2011, but split five months later.
Julianne Hough and Hélio Castroneves
The season 5 champions — pro dancer Julianne Hough and Brazilian racecar driver Hélio Castroneves — first ignited relationship rumors when they shared a kiss on air. Although they never commented on the nature of their relationship, speculation grew when both of the dancing stars called off their engagements a few months later (hers to dancer Zack Wilson and his to businesswoman Aliette Vazquez).
Chris Soules and Witney Carson
The Bachelor's Chris Soules was newly engaged to Whitney Bischoff when he appeared on season 20 of DWTS, and began working with dancing pro Witney Carson. Throughout the season, tensions between Chris and his fiancée rose and rumors began to swirl. The gossip didn't die down after the season ended, and Chris called off his engagement to Whitney. Later, he and his former dance partner took a trip to Philadelphia. Nothing much ever came of the rumors, though. Witney married her high school sweetheart, Carson McAllister, shortly after in 2016 and the pair welcomed a son in early 2021.
Willa Ford and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
After much speculation about whether of not Maksim and his 2006 partner, singer Willa Ford, were in a relationship, the pro dancer spilled the tea on the Allegedly With Theo Von & Matthew Cole Weiss podcast in 2015. According to Maksim, the two dated briefly, but he didn't give any more details.
Mike Catherwood and Lacey Schwimmer
ABC apparently asked pro dancer Lacey Schwimmer and radio personality Mike Catherwood to tone down their overtly sexual interactions, which didn't help the rumors that were already flying about their apparent relationship. However, their passion didn't get them far, as they were the first pair to be eliminated in season 12.
Alec Mazo and Edyta Śliwińska
Alec and Edyta were already together when they joined Dancing with the Stars as pro dancers. The alums got married in 2007 —before the start of the show's fifth season — and have two children together.
Cheryl Cole and Derek Hough
Although Cheryl was never officially on DWTS, she performed her single "Parachute" with Derek on the show in 2009. Derek revealed the two dated for a few months, but called it quits in May 2010.
Anna Trebunskaya and Jonathan Roberts
After nine years of marriage, Anna Trebunskaya and Jonathan Roberts — both professional dancers on DWTS — announced their divorce in 2012. After the divorce, Jonathan didn't return to the show. But Anna did, and partnered with football player Kurt Warner.
Sara Evans and Tony Dovolani
It's never been confirmed that Sara Evans and Tony Dovolani had an affair while working on Dancing with the Stars, but after the country music singer said goodbye to the ballroom, she and her husband entered a nasty divorce. Sara's ex responded to her divorce filing with claims of infidelity on her behalf, including with Tony. But the specifics were never confirmed.
Bonner Bolton and Sharna Burgess
The season 24 pairing of bull rider Bonner Bolton and pro dancer Sharna Burgess sparked rumors of a romance — but the two have maintained that they have only ever been just friends and partners.
