When is Father's Day? What gift should I give? Here's what you need to know.

Father's Day is in June, and that means it is time to don your matching father and son ties.

It is also the day where dad gets let off the hook for cracking every dad joke known to man (even if that means letting them rip in public or in front of family and friends).

Father's Day is known as the day where sons and daughters show their love and appreciation for the fathers and father figures in their lives. What's even lesser known about the holiday is that it was founded by a woman who created the holiday to honor her father, a Civil War veteran.

When is Father's Day this year? And what else is there to know about its history? Read on to learn more.

When is Father's Day this year?

This year, Father's Day will be celebrated on Sunday, June 16, 2024. Every year in the U.S., the special day takes place on the third Sunday of June.

When did Father's Day start?

Sonora Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington, is credited with founding the holiday. She and her five siblings were raised by their father, a Civil War veteran, after their mother passed away during childbirth. The idea for Father's Day was sparked within her when listening to a sermon on Mother's Day, which was being established at the time as a holiday, according to Britannica. With the support of local religious leaders, the first Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910. June was the month of Dodd's father's birthday.

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge showed his support for the day's observance, and in 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued a proclamation recognizing the day. The day became a national holiday in 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed legislation designating Father's Day on the third Sunday of June.

How is Father's Day celebrated?

Father's Day largely began as a religious holiday. Over time, the holiday has been commercialized with the giving of cards and gifts. Certain customs are practiced on the day, such as the adorning of a red rose to signify that one's father is living. If the father is deceased, sons of daughters will wear a white rose. It is important to note that fathers are not the only ones who are celebrated on Father's Day. Grandparents and uncles who have assumed parenting roles are also honored on the holiday.
