Despite multiple postponements and some of the series' most middling reviews from critics, F9—the tenth movie in the high-octane Fast and Furious franchise, which began way back in 2001 with The Fast and Furious—was a bona fide hit. Now Fast X, the eleventh movie in the series (there have been nine movies in the central saga, plus 2019's Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham spinoff Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw) is almost in theaters, but in a twist, the movie will be two parts with Fast X: Part 2, the franchise closer, still to come.

Here's everything we know about Fast XMild spoilers for the previous entries in the series lie ahead.

When is Fast X coming out?

Now that's a complicated question. Fast X: Part 1 will be hitting theaters May 19, 2023, but it's been announced that as with the series conclusions of Harry Potter and Twilight, the final film will be broken in two. Fast X: Part 2 won't race into theaters until sometime in 2025.

There will be 11 movies in the series (12 including Hobbs & Shaw). For now.

Are Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson friends?

The storied feud between the franchise's big stars has been in the press since 2016 while filming of The Fate of the Furious was underway, grabbing attention on social media and beyond as Johnson (in a since-deleted Instagram post) referred to an unnamed-but-seemingly-easy-to-infer members of the cast as "candy asses." Not long after that, a still-indirect, but hardly hard-to-read Diesel added fuel to the flames, promising fans to fully deliver his side of the story, some day.

In the years since, the two seem to have fully buried the hatchet, with Diesel even going as far as to publicly congratulate his former co-star for the success of Hobbs & Shaw. Johnson even expressed remorse for the 2016 post that started it all.

Most recently, Diesel reached out to Johnson in a very public way via Instagram, saying, "I hope that you rise to the occasion and fulfill your destiny." Declaring that no other actor could fill Johnson's shoes, Diesel publicly pleaded for him to return to the series.

Will Dwayne Johnson be in Fast X?

No. The public feud is so public and dramatic it feels like parts of it might even be, possibly, orchestrated. It's not hard to imagine Johnson could come back for a curtain call of one of the biggest franchises ever, but as of this time it's important to note he is definitively not a part of the announced cast for the penultimate movie.

Who is directing Fast and Furious?

After a highly publicized exit from original helmer Justin Lin, The Incredible Hulk director Louis Leterrier is at the wheel.

Is Paul Walker coming back for Fast X?

While Walker himself will not be returning due to his untimely passing, his character Brian O'Conner might pop up again.

F9 ended with an off-camera, nevertheless crowd-pleasing cameo from the Fast family's beloved Brian (the late Paul Walker).

Exactly how remains to be seen, but it's clear the fan-favorite hero cop will factor into the next movie. After Walker's untimely death, Furious 7 incorporated Brian (and gave him a worthy, emotional farewell) using state-of-the-art effects and his lookalike brothers Cody and Caleb.
