The Fast & Furious 9 trailer delivered quite the shock by confirming the return of Han Lue (Sung Kang), despite being long presumed dead.

The character, who first appeared in Tokyo Drift and went on to appear in three more Fast movies, popped up at the end of the latest movie's first look.

Of course, we currently don't know how he survived that fiery car crash, but the ninth movie's director Justin Lin has assured fans that it will all make sense.

"Han is a very special character for me," he told MTV. "He's been kind of a special character throughout. And when I left in [Fast & Furious 6], we kind of left together.

"One of the reasons for me to come back was to bring him back. I was at a Q&A for a film and someone in the audience said they were confused about what happened.

"It really kind of got in my head and inspired me that, if we're gonna continue, we should have justice for Han, for sure."

Lin added that it will be "all connected," adding: "Everything happens for a reason in the Fast Universe."

Kang himself recently said of his character's return: "It's emotional—it feels like I'm going back to a family reunion. It's a relationship that has been missing in my life since the last Fast."
