Fashmatics: Ziggy Stardust + Pop Art = Dior Couture

Ziggy Stardust + James Rosenquist’s 'For Love' = Dior Couture

Since taking over as artistic director of Dior in 2012, designer Raf Simons has aimed to make the storied fashion house more relevant and modern. Yesterday’s couture collection was right on brand as models paraded down the pink carpet in sci-fi style plastic rain coats, sequined mini dresses, plastic thigh high boots and knit bodysuits. (There was only a handful of traditional evening dresses even shown.) Simons said that he was looking to the romance of the fifties, the experimentation of the sixties, and freedom of the seventies for influences. While the collection was a glorious melting pot of all those decades, our favorite was his ode to the psychedelic seventies. This body suit was the perfect hybrid of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust getups and pop artist James Rosenquist’s color clash paintings.
