Fashion Unzipped podcast: The new rules of event dressing and how Virgil Abloh could change the fashion game

It’s letterpress season - the time of year when thick, creamy envelopes filled with invitations start to make their expensive thuds on your welcome mat. It’s not just weddings, either. There are graduations, days at the tennis, brunches, country-house operas, polos and simple back-garden barbecues to dress for. In today's episode, we take you through what we've learned about staying chic through the spring/summer season.

Abloh - the Off-White designer, DJ and Kanye West collaborator - has been named the new artistic director of menswear for Louis Vuitton. It’s Abloh’s first appointment to a major European fashion house and makes him one of very few black designers to lead a major French fashion brand.

"He is someone who's been hugely collaborative in the past couple years," Emily says. "He's bringing a new energy to fashion... I do think it's hugely important and powerful, at a time when we're discussing representation, for a major European fashion house to make a different kind of hire for such a high-profile role - and hugely encouraging."

The view from Seoul

Lisa came to the recording studio almost straight off the plane from Seoul, South Korea, where she attended Seoul Fashion Week. What were her impressions?

"The takeout for me from the shows was the little kiddies outside. Some of them are tiny - they're three years old, and they're decked out in the latest Balenciaga trainer and maybe a little trench coat, and they've been primped and preened by their momagers," Lisa says. "It's partly horrifying but also fascinating."

The social season is about to kick off in earnest, and we've all got to dress for it. The main story in our Wednesday fashion pages is about the 10 rules of event dressing. Not wanting to be dictatorial, these rules are more like guidelines, or reminders - don’t rule out the high street, for example, or stick to flats.

"My two things are, firstly, just to never ever touch linen, because it's the most hopeless material God ever made," Sasha says. "And anything that might possibly involve gravel or grass, you can't have a heel of any kind - a block heel, no spiky anything."
