These Are the Fashion and Beauty Brands Donating to Black Lives Matter

If 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we all can—and should—come together to create positive change. In the face of a global pandemic, companies, individuals, and nonprofits have joined forces to create relief from the devastation of COVID-19. But another kind of devastation is sweeping our country, and it’s taken brands a bit longer to come to the aid of the relief efforts. We’re talking, of course, about the killings of unarmed black Americans.

While many companies were quick to sew masks, make hand sanitizer, and donate a portion of their proceeds to food banks, there was a noticeable period of silence on social media following the recent deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and Ahmaud Arbery—once again, putting the onus on black women to ask our allies to speak up and show support. Thankfully, a number of fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands are answering the call to step up and are now making donations to organizations working to prove that black lives matter.

By donating money to organizations like the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and the Bail Project, these brands are not only effecting positive change, but also using their platforms to signal to the rest of the fashion and beauty industries to do better. Take Glossier, for example, which is donating $500,000 to racial justice organizations and putting another $500,000 toward creating grants for black-owned beauty brands. (That raises another important point: Black-owned businesses are being disproportionately affected by the pandemic; 21% of owners don't think they'll survive.)

So, while we encourage you to buy blacknot just today but always—take some time to get informed on the brands that are doing more than sharing an aesthetically pleasing quote on their Instagram feeds, and read up here on all the ways you can take action too. To be clear, the work doesn't end here—far from it—but it's start.

We’ll continue to update this post as more brands commit their support.
