We’re still reeling from the news that Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn have called it quits after six years together, as reported by Entertainment Tonight on April 8. It turns out, Taylor may have hinted at her breakup days before the split was announced.

Some eagle-eyed fans noticed that during the March 31 show of her “Eras” tour in Arlington, Texas, Taylor unexpectedly switched up her setlist. According to People, Taylor swapped out her dreamy love song “invisible string” for her nostalgic breakup anthem “the 1.” Both ballads are from her 2020 album folklore (which includes two songs co-written by Joe).

The details of Taylor and Joe’s break-up remain a little obscure, but an insider told Entertainment Tonight that it was “not dramatic” and “the relationship had just run its course.”

“It's why [Alwyn] hasn't been spotted at any shows,” the source added, despite previous reports from People that the actor planned to travel with Taylor when possible.

Another insider told CNN that “Taylor and Joe broke up a few weeks ago” and “they simply grew apart and plan to remain friends.”

Taylor and Joe started dating in 2016, and kept their relationship super low-key, save a few subtle social media appearances and rare public outings together. The two never openly discussed their love story, but in October 2022, Taylor opened up about their romance when talking about the inspiration behind her song “lavender haze.”

“Lavender Haze is track 1 on Midnights,” she shared in an Instagram video dated October 7. “I happened upon the phrase 'lavender haze' when I was watching Mad Men. I looked it up because I thought it sounded cool. And it turns out that it’s a common phrase used in the ’50s where they would describe being in love. If you're in the ‘lavender haze,’ then that meant you were in that all-encompassing love glow. And I thought that was really beautiful.”

“I guess, theoretically, when you’re in the ‘lavender haze,’ you’ll do anything to stay there,” the singer-songwriter continued. “And not let people bring you down off of that cloud. I think that a lot of people have to deal with this now, not just like ‘public figures,’ because we live in the era of social media, and if the world finds out if you’re in love with somebody they’re going to weigh in on it. Like my relationship for six years, we’ve had to dodge weird rumors, tabloid stuff, and we just ignore it. So this song is about the act of ignoring that stuff to protect the real stuff.”

At this time, neither Taylor nor Joe has commented on their break up. 💔
