Fans Think Selena Gomez’s New Song ‘Lose You to Love Me’ Is About Justin Bieber

At midnight on October 23, Selena Gomez dropped her latest single, "Lose You to Love Me." As is typical with her music (and that of her BFF Taylor Swift), fans immediately began analyzing every lyric for hidden meanings. "Thank you all for standing by my side through the highs and lows. I couldn’t do it without you all and I can’t wait to start my next adventure with you 🖤 Lose You To Love Me is out now," she wrote on Twitter.

The general online consensus? This is totally a song about her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber. Bieber, of course, is now married to Hailey Baldwin, but there was a time when the on-again, off-again Jelena romance was the buzziest thing around. Now with this new song about a toxic relationship, some think that Gomez is getting in some parting words on everything that went down in their relationship.

One of the key lyrics fans are pointing to is “Set fire to my purpose and I let it burn / You got off in the hurtin’ when I wasn’t yours," which they believe is a reference to Bieber's 2015 album, Purpose. Later in the song, Gomez sings, “In two months you replaced us like it was easy / Made me think I deserved it in the thick of healing.” This could be a reference to Bieber's getting together with Baldwin in the months after his final breakup with Gomez in 2017.

People on Twitter had a lot to say, naturally. "Selena Gomez had to lose Justin Bieber to love herself, is that it? #LoseYouToLoveMe," one wrote. "Listened to Selena Gomez’ new song and I’m a fan! It’s sad hearing her say 'In two months you replaced us.' I can literally feel her pain and how hurt she was that Justin Bieber got together with Hailey so fast. 😪," another tweeted.

Another fan hopes that this will put an end to the relationship discussion between the Selenators and the Beliebers: "Justin and Selena were both toxic for each each other and now he’s married and Selena seems like she’s doing well too. I just hope both fandoms can move on now bc imagine how tired we are."
