Fans Think Olivia Rodrigo Put a Princess Diaries Easter Egg About Joshua Bassett in ‘Good 4 U’
One day after Olivia Rodrigo dropped the “Good 4 U” breakup banger, fans are still uncovering Easter eggs.
On May 14 fans rejoiced over the release of Rodrigo’s third single from her upcoming debut album, Sour. Not only did viewers love the unexpected divergence from Rodrigo’s popular ballads “Driver’s License” and “Deja Vu,” they also felt the Disney star epically channeled Hayley Williams’s early Paramore days.
Then, of course, there were all the clear references to the cult-favorite campy horror film Jennifer’s Body, starring Megan Fox. In the “Good 4 U” video, directed by Petra Collins, Rodrigo portrays a similarly unhinged cheerleader. However, fans are starting to suss out references to other films like Audition and—wait for it—The Princess Diaries.
In Jennifer’s Body, the uniform is royal blue and gold with a school logo on the front, while Rodrigo wore a softer blue-and-white look for “Good 4 U.” In fact, it looks a lot more like the one worn by Mandy Moore when she played mean-girl Lana Thomas in the 2001 classic.
But many believe that the nod to Princess Diaries is about more than aesthetics. In fact, they think it’s a layered Easter egg reference to her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series costar and rumored ex-boyfriend, Joshua Bassett. On May 14, TikTok user @giselelizbth pointed out in a video that not only do Olivia Rodrigo and Lana Thomas match, but they may have something else in common. When @giselelizbth googled Lana’s ex-boyfriend—you know, the one who went on a date with Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway) in order to feed her location to the press—the user discovered his name was also Josh. Fans on Twitter also made the connection. “Everyone was saying the cheerleading outfit Liv wears in the ‘good 4 u video’ is like the one Mandy Moore wears in The Princess Diaries and I was like hmm why would she do that and THEN I REMEMBERED THAT MEAN BOY IN THE MOVIE WAS NAMED JOSH,” one user tweeted. Even more damning: The character’s full name is Joshua Bryant, making his initials J.B.
If all this is true, Easter egg queen Taylor Swift would be proud. Well, more proud than she already is.
