On Tuesday, December 5, ABC and Disney+ aired the season 32 finale of Dancing With the Stars. For the first time ever, the series featured a top-five finale instead of the regular top-four format that’s been traditionally followed.

Two out LGBTQ+ contestants made it to the grand finale: Out100 honoree Jason Mraz and Vanderpump Rules star Ariana Madix. For her finale performances, Madix danced the samba to Spice Girls’ “Spice Up Your Life” and did a freestyle performance to Beyoncé’s “Run the World (Girls)” and Ciara’s “Level Up.” Mraz danced the foxtrot to Frank Sinatra’s “Fly Me to the Moon” and had a freestyle number to C2C’s “Happy.”

Unfortunately, Madix and her dancing partner Pasha Pashvok ended up placing third overall. In turn, Mraz and his partner Daniella Karagach finished as the runners-up. The Mirrorball Trophy was awarded to actress Xochitl Gomez alongside pro dancer Val Chmerkovskiy, who earned perfect scores in both of their finale performances.

Mraz wrote in an Instagram post:

“What a wild ride this was! Thank you [Daniella Karagach] for taking me to the moon! What a star you are! And thanks to everyone who voted and supported us on this mystical magical musical journey. We wouldn’t be here at the #DWTSFinale without you [heart emoji].”

And yet, a lot of viewers are calling shade when it comes to Mraz’s placement as runner-up. Fans on social media were absolutely amazed by the singer’s performances with Karagach at the finale, and definitely believe that Mraz and Karagach should’ve been the winning duo of DWTS season 32.
