Fans Think Demi Lovato Is the Phoenix on ‘Masked Singer’ Season 5

Much like a phoenix rising from the ashes, The Masked Singer is back for season 5 and—convenient!—there’s a literal Phoenix. And, like, I’m not saying it’s been sent to us directly from Dumbledore’s office at Hogwarts, but I’m also not not saying that. Anyway, apparently, some poor celebrity is trapped inside this Phoenix’s feathery chamber of secrets and the time has come to hypothesize about their identity. Please put on your detective mask and join me as we go through some clues.

The Clues

I don’t know WHAT KIND OF HIJINKS The Masked Singer is trying to pull here, but for some inexplicable reason, they haven’t released a clue package for the Phoenix just yet. Next-level rude, and frankly, I’m getting Slytherin vibes from whoever made this decision. (No, I will not be stopping with these Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix references, apologies in perpetuity.)

Instead of a clue package, all we have for the time being is this dramatic zoom-out of the Phoenix with the largely unhelpful tagline, “I’ve risen from the ashes.” This presumably evokes the image of a celeb who had a career slump and has since come back stronger than ever, but who knows!

The Theories

Despite The Masked Singer doing the absolute least with clues for the Phoenix thus far, the internet has come through with some compelling theories. Please note: We’ll be adding to this list as soon as an actual clue package is released, since as of now, all we have to go on is an image and a tagline.

Andra Day

Commenters think the Phoenix could be Andra Day because she has a song called “Rise Up.” And, you know, the Phoenix rises from the ashes, etc. I mean…sure, I get the connection! But then again, Andra just won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a motion picture drama thanks to her performance in The United States vs. Billie Holiday and now it’s Oscar nomination season, so I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that she’s a bit too busy to participate this season.

Demi Lovato or Kesha

Multiple people think the Phoenix could be either Demi or Kesha based on the fact that both of these stars have “risen” back up after going through a lot of tough personal stuff. So far, both of these theories are based on “vibes” versus actual hard evidence, but a few of Demi’s fans in particular are definitely convinced:

That’s honestly all for now, but again: We’ll be updating this list as more theories emerge and The Masked Singer drops a clue package for the Phoenix. Oh, and reminder for those of you confused about where Nick Cannon is this season: Nope, he’s not inside one of these costumes! Nick took a break from filming for the first half of the season due to testing positive for COVID-19. He was temporarily replaced by Niecy Nash and is expected to step back in as host sometime in the second half of the season, but stay tuned for specifics!
