Fans Sound Off on Flounder's Appearance in New ‘Little Mermaid’

Flounder's had a makeover, but the results aren't what we were anticipating!
A month ahead of its theatrical release, Disney has finally unveiled the last of the first looks at all of the main characters of its live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid, and let's just say, fans are a bit confused by one key player's appearance.
When we first met Flounder in the 1989 film, he was an energetic, unmissable presence, decked out in bright, bold shades of yellow and blue and roughly the size of Ariel's head, if not slightly larger. But this new iteration leaves much to be desired, with the little mermaid's beloved sidekick significantly slimmed down—so much so that several users joked that nobody in Hollywood was safe from the Ozempic craze—and a pale yellow/white color with black or very dark blue stripes.

Despite his namesake, the fish is confirmed to be a guppy in the animated series, while the new version appears to be a hyperrealistic Sergeant major—something fans of the series are not on board with.
One user summed up the bulk of the internet's feelings in a brief sentence:
This is now a live action Flounder hate account, fuck this guy pic.twitter.com/KXNuvQ7X16

While others got a little more specific—in some cases, aggressively so—with their complaints:
in the original Little Mermaid, Flounder was meatier. if you saw him on someone’s plate on a restaurant you’d go “i’ll have THAT.” This new one does not look appetizing and could not satisfy me.

Not they put Flounder on Ozempic! Why he so skinny??? This fish look like Steve Buscemi pic.twitter.com/GuUvJ8HwGO

It actually rules that these Disney live actions suck so much ass. Just look at this fish with zero anthropomorphic features. I could kill this version of flounder and feel nothing. https://t.co/AWaKdVULTU

Why does flounder look like a senator who should have retired decades ago pic.twitter.com/joBZfZCASW

live action will always be a flop for me bc animation allows for artistic representation that tells a story. the bright colours and the bubbly design of the original flounder tells me about their character... this is a fish and i can't see its soul. https://t.co/LbwYWVsXIO

Even a Texas police department entered the chat, confirming that the new animation was a crime, though they hadn't determined exactly which one just yet:
Yes this is a crime- we’re just trying to find out which one https://t.co/2lgQAYAuic

But, amongst all of the discourse, a single Flounder fan rose above it all:
I’m a flounder defender okay no one better talk shit. He looks nice pic.twitter.com/QkvqHOWNnA

A few others also jumped in to remind us that it could be worse—they could have modeled him after the sequel, or even made him an actual flounder:
Everyone talking about how Flounder looks weird in #TheLittleMermaid May I remind you of this… pic.twitter.com/i8cTLckXj9

everyone wants a photorealistic live action little mermaid until it comes time to reckon with what a true flounder looks like pic.twitter.com/q4Fd9PRGXH

But, as another pointed out, it could have been better, too, if they'd taken a page out of the animators of Finding Nemo's book:
The reactions to #Flounder's appearance in #TheLittleMermaid remake are making me think about how the filmmakers on Finding Nemo had to make so many intentional design choices to allow the fish characters to believably emote pic.twitter.com/6tpW3J1kjf
