At the start of a new week, The View fans tuned in to watch Joy Behar, Whoopi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin and Sara Haines discuss the latest “Hot Topics.” But just a few days later, Joy and Sunny walked on to the stage without the rest of the crew. Moments after settling into her seat, Joy took the lead and addressed the question folks were going to start asking: Where is Whoopi?

The Brooklyn native shared that Whoopi was busy working on another gig but she would be returning soon. “Whoopi is in Scotland filming a new project and will be back at the table on May 2,” Joy said on the show on April 13. So, for fans wondering if Whoopi is leaving The View, the answer is no. (As for Sara’s absence, she was battling “some kind of stomach virus" but is hopefully now on the mend!)

Later on, Joy elaborated a little bit more about what Whoopi was up to during her time away from the daytime TV show. “If you're wondering where Whoopi is, the girl's got a movie she's making and she will be back when she finishes whatever she's doing. So, she's gone for a while," she said. That’s right — she’s returning to her acting roots for Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel Anansi Boys, which is being adapted into a limited series for Amazon Prime Video.

After hearing the reason for why Whoopi wasn't on The View, fans shared their excitement for her on Twitter. "I love and miss you @WhoopiGoldberg CONGRATULATIONS on your new film role! I can't hardly wait to see it and see you back on @TheView!" one person wrote. "I've always loved watching the [movies] that you play in. It's nice to see you in them again," another added. "Love You Whoopi Goldberg! Stay safe please. 🙏🏽," a different fan said.

On April 7, Deadline reported that Whoopi landed the part of Bird Woman who is the God of Birds and the "embodiment of birds." The New York Times bestselling book features a protagonist named Charlie who meets a cast of characters when he discovers that he’s a god and he has a brother. Among them is Bird Woman described as the "most dangerous [bird] of them all" and she's back for revenge.

By the sounds of it, Whoopi is up for the challenge. “I have been a fan of this book for a very long time,” she said in a statement. “When Neil Gaiman told me it was being brought to the screen, I did everything I could to be part of it to help make people aware of Anansi and all his magic.”

What’s more, the author revealed that he wouldn’t imagine picking anyone else besides her. “When I first conceived Anansi Boys decades ago, I imagined Whoopi Goldberg as Bird Woman,” he said in his own statement. “She mentioned that she had just finished listening to Sir Lenny Henry’s reading of Anansi Boys and that it was one of her favorite books. Sometimes things feel planned and inevitable, and we are incredibly lucky. She’s going to be scary.”

As fans may know, Whoopi is an acclaimed actress starring in more than 150 movies and shows since her Hollywood career took off in 1985. Since then, she has achieved "EGOT" status, becoming one of the select few to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award. In recent years, Whoopi has taken time away from The View to pursue other acting roles and we're sure she's going to nail this one too.
