Meghan Markle turned 42 on August 4th, and it seems like she did quite a few things to celebrate it! According to Page Six, the mom-of-two celebrated her birthday a few days early by going on a girls’ trip to a Santa Barbara theater to watch the Barbie movie, while her husband stayed home with their kids. We also know that she and Harry attended celebrity hotspot Tre Lune in Montecito for a romantic dinner on Wednesday, August 2nd.

While many of the former Suits actress’s friends and fans sent their well wishes on social media on August 4th, the royal family was very noticeably silent on the big day. The internet had a lot of thoughts about how the Duchess of Sussex’s birthday was celebrated – or not celebrated, more accurately – as the royal family kept an extremely dignified silence on the big day. (Was it dignified, or was it harsh? The internet, as expected, was divided!)

The Royal Family Don't Acknowledge Meghan Markle's 42nd Birthday On Social Media

Interestingly, Meghan *did* receive some messages from the royal family last year, including a short message from Prince William and Kate Middleton's account. For her 41st birthday last year – which we must point out was just one month before the late Queen Elizabeth II passed away – Prince William and Kate wrote: "Wishing a happy birthday to The Duchess of Sussex!" alongside a picture of her in a white coat and matching white hat. The Clarence House account, which back then was used for the then Prince Charles and Camilla's updates, shared the same message alongside a different picture of Meghan.

This year, neither Meghan, nor her children Prince Archie, who turned four on May 6th, the same day as King Charles' coronation, and Princess Lilibet, who turned 2 on June 4th, received any social media messages from the royal family. Granted a lot has happened over the past year, but the internet did have a lot of thoughts about the royal family's silence…

The Internet Had Thoughts About The Royal Family's Silence

"Well done royal family," wrote one Twitter user in the comments section of a TMZ post about the lack of social media acknowledgement, which another echoed, writing, "Excellent. Keep it up, RF," followed by four hand clapping emojis. "I don’t blame them," wrote another, as another added: "Why would they? They’ve had enough." "Can’t imagine why they would ignore her," another user sarcastically wrote. "The Royal Family do not publicly acknowledge the birthdays of non-working Royals," another user wrote on Twitter, as another said, "I wasn’t expecting the palace to acknowledge the birthday."

Many other Twitter users thought that Meghan shouldn’t care about receiving social media messages from the royal family since she and Prince Harry are distancing themselves from them. "She had millions of GENUINE happy birthday messages from her fans around the world," said one Meghan fan, as another added, "As long as she has her husband and her child, that’s all she needs to worry about for her birthday." Another said, "So what??!! I’m sure she celebrated with the people who MATTER to her." "Meghan is living her best life, I’m sure she doesn’t care and hasn’t even given it a thought," another fan wrote.
