Fans Are Losing It Over Michelle Yeoh’s Mom's Tearful Oscars Reaction
You're not the only one who was tearing up during the 95th Academy Award's acceptance speeches. From Ke Huy Quan's tearful speech thanking his mother and wife to Jamie Lee Curtis's touching tribute to her late parents, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, the night's biggest winners' on-stage moments were humbling dedications to the people who raised them. And, as Michelle Yeoh's mom's reaction proves, the love goes both ways.
While the Everything Everywhere All at Once star was the toast of the town in Hollywood, mom Janet Yeoh was enjoying a viewing with her family and friends in Malaysia. (In a now-viral TikTok, Michelle's mom was seen wiping a tear away seconds before her daughter was announced as the winner of the 2023 Best Actress Awards.)
Once Michelle's name was announced—making her the first Asian woman to ever receive the covetable prize—the Malaysian party erupted in cheers and her mother donned an ear-to-ear grin. Slowly but surely, the Yeoh matriarch shared big hugs with her inner circle and even placed her hands in a bagel shape on her forehead, a symbol that has been used by the cast throughout awards season.
“I’m very excited. I’m proud of my daughter,” Janet Yeoh told reporters, according to TODAY. “I love my daughter. My daughter is a hardworking girl.”
Of course, we can only imagine that the tears continued as Janet's "little princess" dedicated her historic award to all the mothers in the world—especially her own.
"I have to dedicate this to my mom, all the moms in the world, because they are really the superheroes," Michelle said in her acceptance speech. "And without them, none of us will be here tonight. She’s 84 and I’m taking this home to her."
We have a feeling Michelle and Janet will have a lot to celebrate—and, yes, plenty of happy tears—once they are reunited!
