- Garth Brooks won the 2019 CMAs Entertainer of the Year Award.
- To put it plainly, fans are upset that Carrie Underwood didn't win.
Look, Garth Brooks is great. But country music fans are downright outraged that he beat out Carrie Underwood for Entertainer of the Year at the 2019 CMAs.
Carrie was the only woman nominated in the category, and was up against Garth, Keith Urban, Eric Church, and Chris Stapleton. Many had hedged their bets on Carrie—including Miranda Lambert—considering she released her Cry Pretty album and has been on the Cry Pretty 360 tour all while managing a fitness brand, raising two babies, and writing a new book. But who’s keeping track?
The upset also comes during a year when the CMAs was all about celebrating women. In fact, Brad Paisley didn’t host for the first time in over a decade so that Carrie, Reba McEntire, and Dolly Parton could head up the night.
All of that to say, viewers at home are not thrilled.
This is such a slap in the face. Not only to Carrie, but to the women of country music in general. So much for celebrating women tonight, but you’re going to continue giving these awards to mediocre men. @CountryMusic congrats on getting it wrong yet again. #CMAawards— 𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐬 🥀 (@alexiscmalday27) November 14, 2019
What does Carrie Underwood have to do to win Entertainer of the Year. Cure cancer? #CMAawards— American Idol Fan (@krummy09) November 14, 2019
I am ANGRY. No shame to Garth, but CARRIE HAS EVERY RIGHT TO WIN THAT AWARD #CMAawards— Marcus Smith (@krazydudems) November 14, 2019

Look I hate country music as much as ANYONE, but seriously how can it be 2019 and Garth Brooks is still chosen as the country entertainer of the year of whatever? #CMAawards— Shnaps (@Shnaps) November 14, 2019
CMAs: We love celebrating women in country music!— Gibson Johns (@gibsonoma) November 14, 2019
Also #CMAs: *gives Garth Brooks his seventh Entertainer of the Year award over Carrie Underwood, who has still somehow never won the biggest award in country music*#CMAawards
“This is such a slap in the face. Not only to Carrie, but to the women of country music in general,” one person wrote. “So much for celebrating women tonight but you’re going to continue giving these awards to mediocre men.”
Others said they were “disappointed” and “angry” that the CMAs wasn’t showing Carrie respect. “I am ANGRY. No shame to Garth, but CARRIE HAS EVERY RIGHT TO WIN THAT AWARD.”
Garth Crooks not acknowledging Carrie Underwood during his acceptance speech is the most disrespectful and disgusting thing I have witnessed on live TV. I hate this man. #CMAawards pic.twitter.com/0Ipr02TeHX— B (@liveasong4) November 14, 2019
Garth Brooks doesn't even mention Carrie Underwood in his Entertainer of the Year speech. He mentions Kelsea Ballerini, and Luke Combs, and Reba McEntire while hugging the award like a baby. But not Carrie standing feet from him. #CMAawards— Saving Country Music (@KyleCoroneos) November 14, 2019
Garth has such an opportunity to call more attention to the women in radio problem. He didn’t. And then he shouts out Reba and not his fellow nominee Carrie? And then she has to go out on stage, clearly disappointed in the status quo and end the night. Damn. #CMAawards— Sarah Boesveld (@sarahboesveld) November 14, 2019
And don’t even get people started about the fact that Garth didn’t mention Carrie in his speech, despite calling out other performers like Kelsea Ballerini and Luke Combs.
not watching the #cmas currently but if carrie underwood doesn’t win the entertainer of the year award we riot at dawn— jason ✨ (@JAS0NBROWN) November 14, 2019
Anyways, we had all previously agreed to “riot at dawn” so we’ll see you there?
