[Warning: Minor This Is Us season 4 spoilers ahead]

Who knew that in the year of our Lord 2020, the series with the most mysteries would be about a wholesome upper-middle-class family just going through it? Forget Lost and Game of Thrones, This Is Us pulls off a twist like no other. Maybe that’s why fans are still driving themselves crazy trying to figure out who the mother of Kevin’s son is…even though he’s yet to show up in season 4.

There’s a lot to be solved this season, and it all stems from the flash-forward to the Big Three’s 40th birthday that was shown earlier this year. Not only is the relationship between Randall, Kevin, and Kate a total disaster, but it was also revealed that Kevin not only has a fiancée but also a baby on the way—talk about speaking his desires into existence.

There’s only one problem though. We have yet to find out exactly who the woman in question might be, and even though that birthday scene is likely approaching at the end of the season, there’s definitely still time for This Is Us to pull a fast one on us, like they’ve done in the past. Who is she?!

So far, it doesn’t seem like the cast is giving us any hints—aside from Justin Hartley, who told Entertainment Weekly that his child may not even be connected to his fiancée necessarily, which opens up a whole new world of options for where this story could go.

As far as the audience goes, we know absolutely nothing. I mean, did he find this kid? [Laughs] Did he adopt this kid? Did he get married? Did he have this kid out of wedlock? Does he have more than one child? Is this is the oldest? Is this his youngest? Why wasn’t he there? I know it was said he went to get food…It just seems like it’s wide open for an amazing story to be told.

At first, it seemed like the scales were tipping in favor of Cassidy, but she hasn’t appeared on the show in several episodes, so it seems like she’s a no-go. Then it seemed totally possible it could be Sophie…yeah, she’s engaged to someone else, but she and Kevin really connected when he showed up to support her at her mom’s funeral, and like I said before, this is This Is Us, and anything could happen.

But at this point, the most likely woman in Kevin’s flash-forward? Madison—yep, Kate’s BFF. As we saw in Season 4, Episode 12, “A Hell Of a Week: Part Two,” Kevin and Madison ended up in bed together after he ran into her at Kate’s house and she’d recently been dumped. That was a totally unexpected moment, but they were both feeling pretty vulnerable.

So far, there’s no indication of whether this is a one-night stand or going to develop into a real relationship, but as Hartley told People after the episode aired, it could get awkward.

“Madison’s position in Kevin and Kate’s life, because she is a part of the family, that’s obviously a sticky and tricky situation. If she wasn’t, then it wouldn’t be a thing. But because she is, it’s like, ‘Man, of all the people, you had to choose this one?’” he said. “He gets caught up in the moment sometimes; he thinks more with his heart than his brain. But I also think she was this person saying the right things to him and she wasn’t turning him away. She was there for him too and consoling him in a time of need. So we’ll see.”

In the past, This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman has ruled out Kevin as a love interest for Madison, because the actress who plays her, Caitlin Thompson, is Fogelman’s wife in real life. But, uh, things seem to have changed.

Now, while we can’t rule out Cassidy completely, it seems safe to assume that either Sophie or Madison could be the mother of Kevin’s son…and there are so many moving parts that any of this could change at any time.

We’ll just have to keep watching and waiting. There is so much going on this season, and it’s definitely going to be interesting to find out how it all fits together in the end.
