Fans Complained That 'Game of Thrones' Was Too Dark Tonight

Okay, look. We all know that Game of Thrones is a very dark show, emotionally and psychologically speaking. We all know that when we tune in for this show, we are signing up for violence, death, incest, torture, and the story of power-hungry lunatics all vying for an increasingly meaningless throne. We get it. But... does the show have to literally be this dark?

There were a lot of reasons to be very, very nervous going into the Battle of Winterfell, the fight against the Night King which claimed the lives of many of our faves. This was always going to be a tough episode to watch, but most fans didn't anticipate it also being a tough episode to see. In fairness, yes, the battle took place at night so light sources were limited, but the problem here seemed to be combination of low lighting and confusing editing.

Throughout the first half hour of the episode, Twitter was flooded with fans complaining that the show was too dark for them to figure out WTF was happening as the battle ramped up.

There were about 100 different variations on that last meme, if you want to go ahead and scroll through Twitter at your leisure.

Things became a little clearer as the episode went on, and fortunately/unfortunately we could all see perfectly clearly when poor Theon, Lyanna and Jorah met their fates. And thee was no doubt at all what was going down in the truly transcendent moment when Arya appeared out of nowhere to slay the Night King. But now that we've won the Great War, can somebody turn on a goddamn light?
