Fans Break Down After 'You's Final Season Announcement

Pass the tissue box to Joe Goldberg fans.

While Friday is generally regarded as a good day that lends itself to the official start of the weekend, Friday, March 24, was the exact opposite of a good day for You fans.

On this very day, Netflix confirmed the dreaded news—the upcoming fifth season would be Joe Goldberg’s last hurrah.

“Goodbye... YOU. Joe Goldberg will return for the fifth and final season of You in 2024,” the official Netflix social media account wrote, delivering both a renewal and a cancellation in one fell swoop.

The news, dreaded as it may be, is not entirely surprising; Penn Badgley, who brilliantly brings the deranged serial killer to life, has expressed his desire for the fifth season to be the drama’s last.

In a previous interview with IndieWire, the Gossip Girl alum explained, “It feels to me like we need to do another season. It feels to me like Joe needs to get what’s coming to him, and now he has further to fall because he has all this power and wealth,” adding, “But of course, that’s not up to me. I don’t know where it’s going. But to me, with this concept and with this character, we always wanted to be responsible and it’s not just the kind of thing we can let keep going because it’s doing well.”

“I know the creators of the show always had this next season in mind as its last, should there be another one,” he further elaborated about season five being the cutoff. And there's something so self-aware about ending a series in its prime and on a high note before it burns out audiences and actors alike.

But even though you know something is coming, it doesn’t make it any less painful.

“am i aware that this is necessary as the story is clearly reaching its logical conclusion? yes. am i still gonna cry about it? no comment (like a baby),” one fan chimed in.

“i’m crying literally like literal tears are building up in my eyes,” a second fan wrote under the Twitter announcement, as another uttered, “How am I supposed to live without YOU?”

A third was all up in her feels, stating, “Yaasssssss another season But nooooooooo!!!!!! Sad it will be the last season xoxo,” with another suggesting, “Joe Goldberg the only stalker I’ll miss. End of an era.”

Other fans weighed in with their final season wishes as one noted, “Fingers crossed that Ellie makes an appearance and teams up with Marianne!” and another urged for the series creators to call up Jenna Ortega right now before she gets too busy.

Another viewer had a list of very reasonable demands, including “several Taylor Swift songs on the soundtrack, joe watching gossip girl, a lot of button down shirts halfway buttoned, and his beard back!!!!”

There’s currently no premiere date set for You season five, but as the announcement noted, it's expected to land on the streamer sometime in 2024!
