Fans Applaud HGTV Stars’ Social Media Rules for Their Kids

Ben and Erin Napier, the stars of HGTV's popular series Home Town, in which they bring new life to historic properties, are gaining a lot of praise for their perspective on social media for their kids.

The couple shared their strict rules on when their two daughters, Helen, 5, and Mae, 1, will be able to use social media in a recent conversation with TODAY.

Erin said: "Our personal policy is we’re not going to let our kids have any access to social media until they’re done with high school, I think, until you’re old enough to see it for what it is."

The parents want their daughters to be old enough to "process" social media, with Erin adding, “It’s our job to build a hedge of protection around their heart until they’re strong enough to fight that battle."

She noted how hard it can be to take criticism and bullying on social media as an adult herself, noting, "People don't think there's humans behind the screen reading this. I know how it makes me feel, so why would I let my kids be subjected to something like that?"

TODAY shared a tidbit of the couple's conversation on Instagram, and many people praised them in the comments.

One supporter wrote, "I wish I had done that - well done !!!"

"Great decision, when I grew up, you had to use your brain, be creative and play outside which I personally believe makes you a better person 👏👏👏👏👏," said another.

Other comments ranged from "Smart people" to "Good for them!"

Some commented that their goal might be difficult to achieve, given so much of learning is done through technology and the parents won't have any control over what their daughters see in school or outside of the home.

Despite that, overall, people are in support of Ben and Erin's ideas about raising kids with (or without) social media—wishing them luck and hoping for the best!
