The Fanciest MoonSwatch Is Landing StatesideSwatch

We've been all-in from the get-go. While some folks wrung their hands in anticipation of the collaboration between Swatch and Omega, we were just excited to see two brands from under the same umbrella—that is, Swatch Group—getting together and having the kind of fun that Swatch has always championed in the sometimes-a-little-self-serious world of watchmaking. We even called the the idea that the MoonSwatch would devalue the original Omega Speedmaster Professional "Moonwatch," after which it's modeled, "far-fetched" when the news of the team-up broke just over a year ago.

Now, it's clear that we were understating the issue. The MoonSwatch was, in many ways, the watch of 2022. From the initial hype to the post-release popularity that created a strange blend of sticker-price accessibility and real-world scarcity—people are still asking for astronomical sums on eBay when they manage to snag a particularly rare version, like the Mission to Neptune—the humble BioCeramic timepiece with the impressive pedigree became a full-fledged phenomenon.

Now, it's back again, which won't come as news to anyone who's been following Swatch and Omega's continued efforts. Last month, the Mission to Moonshine Gold iteration of the watch—basically the Mission to the Moon from the OG release but finished with a gold-plated second hand and priced at $285 instead of $260—made its debut in a number of markets around the globe. Notably absent from the list, though, was anywhere in the United States. That changes as of Thursday, April 6, when the MoonSwatch finally lands in New York City at Swatch's Times Square flagship at 7 P.M. Eastern time.

What's that mean for fans hoping to get their hands on a MoonSwatch of their own? Well, if prior releases are anything to go by, you can expect a lot of demand and not as much supply. Folks will likely be lining up early—maybe even camping out Wednesday night—for a chance to buy one. It's daunting, for sure. But hey, at least the truly devoted will have a clear view of things as they wait for a shot at the prize: In a nod to the MoonSwatch's origins, the Swatch team timed the release to the full moon, which reaches peak illumination at 12:34 A.M., exactly 18 hours and 36 minutes before the Mission to Moonshine Gold touches down in NYC.
