A Famous Tennis Star Is the Narrator of 'Never Have I Ever'

McEnroe, like Devi, was known for his epic meltdowns throughout his tennis career.
In case you missed it, Never Have I Ever, a series co-created by The Office star Mindy Kaling, recently dropped on Netflix. And, as it turns out, tennis legend John McEnroe plays a pivotal role in the show as the narrator, the voice heard inside Devi's head. John McEnroe is, of course, a former tennis pro and champ, as well as talk show host, perhaps best known for the occasional tantrum during his career.

Who is John McEnroe?
McEnroe is a tennis legend who has a track record for misbehavior. It was in 1984 when he had the ultimate meltdown at a Grand Prix tennis event and fought with an empire, which later got him suspended from the game for three weeks.
Despite all the drama, McEnroe holds seven Grand Slam single titles and nine doubles. He was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1999, and held the title of Player of the Year in 1981, 1983, and 1984 for the Association of Tennis Professionals.
It might seems strange that McEnroe narrates the show.
Although it probably seems a little confusing as to why a tennis legend might narrate a sitcom about teenagers in high-school, co-creator Mindy Kaling explained her reasons for the casting. “We had this idea of, you know, there’s a certain kind of immigrant dad and there’s an American icon that he latches on to. And for my dad, that was Tom Brady,” Kaling said. “We just thought it would be great if the way that an Indian father tried to relate to his Indian-American daughter was through the lens of this American that he trusted and thought was great.”
McEnroe also makes a cameo in the season finale.
In the final episode, Devi finds herself talking to the tennis star (carrying a surfboard, no less) on the beach. “I didn’t expect it,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “[Kaling]’s like, ‘We’d love you to do a cameo.” I was like, ‘Okay, that’d be cool. Does that make sense?” Yes, McEnroe. Your scene made absolute perfect sense. (You’ll have to watch the show to see what he’s talking about.)
McEnroe would likely return for another season.
If the show gets picked up for a second season, McEnroe has already voiced his interest in wanting to narrate once more. "I know Mindy’s proud of it and people are responding," he told EW. "I’m getting people I haven’t heard from for years saying, ‘I heard you on Never Have I Ever,’ which has been nice.
