Famous 'Main Chute' Backcountry Line Is Still Skiable In Utah

Alta Ski Area, Utah, is still skiable, provided you're willing to do some hiking.

Watch as a skier descends a narrow strip of summer snow on the Main Chute off the iconic Mt. Baldy.

During the winter, this zone is accessed by riding the Sugarloaf chair before hiking the ridge of Mt. Baldy. Now that most of the snow is gone and the lifts aren't spinning, accessing Main Chute requires a bit more elbow grease. But skiing in July is skiing in July, right?

Here's this zone shown on Alta's map.

Alta Ski Area

I know I said Alta was "skiable" in the intro to this paragraph, but in situations like these, the term "skiable" is debatable. I mean, technically, wet asphalt is skiable if you find a steep enough incline.

While the snow in Main Chute isn't that bad, it's definitely not hero snow this far into the summer, considering the regional warm temps and dust. Plus, you're looking at a somewhat serious hike to access it.

Ultimately, it boils down to how far you're willing to go to get some skiing in once the proper season's over. Personally, I'm inclined to stick to summer sports that come more naturally unless I'm headed to a summer ski area like Mt. Hood, Oregon, or Mammoth Mountain, California.

But if schlepping up Alta's mostly snowless slopes to find a shaded patch of the good stuff is your thing, knock yourself out. I'll always respect those committed to the turns all-year lifestyle. This video was uploaded five days ago, so some snow should still be kicking around.

As always, if you plan to head into the backcountry, ensure your skills and gear are up to snuff. Avalanches are still a risk in the summer. If you don't know, don't go.

Be smart and come home safe!
