Family Dollar Is Closing Nearly 1,000 Stores — Here's When

Nearly one thousand Family Dollars across the country are closing up shop.
On March 13, parent company, Dollar Tree, announced in a press release it plans to shutter nearly 1,000 Family Dollar stores after seeing declining sales in 2023. According to the report, that includes roughly 600 locations that will close by June. After that, about 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores will follow suit once each lease term finishes.
There are currently over 8,000 Family Dollar locations across the United States. Dollar Tree Inc., which owns Family Dollar, has not yet released an official list of stores that would be impacted. Upon inquiry, a spokesperson told ABC11: "Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores are important to thousands of communities across this country. We owe it to those we serve to position all of the stores for success and meet the expectations of our valued customers and associates."

Though widely considered a go-to for greeting cards, school supplies and candy, the shops also serve as grocery stores for families who live in food deserts. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, about 53.6 million people, or 17.4% of the U.S. population, live in areas that are low-income and low-access, and are more than one-half mile or 10 miles from the nearest supermarket.
What's more, the closures at Family Dollar and Dollar Tree do leave a rather significant hole that other thriving discount stores seem eager to fill. Earlier this year, Dollar General committed to stocking thousands of its locations with fresh fruits and produce.
"We are constantly looking for ways to better serve our customers and one of our top priorities is to ensure the communities we call home have access to fresh, affordable and convenient food options," Dollar General Executive Vice President Emily Taylor told USA Today.
The news of the closures come on the heels of Macy's also announcing it would be closing 150 stores across the country by 2026.
