While cozy sherpa teddy jackets aren’t going anywhere this fall, there’s one vintage-inspired style you’ll start seeing everywhere. As the temperatures drop, keep an eye out for the ever-so-chic lady jacket.

A lady jacket is essentially a shacket — a cross between a shirt and a jacket — with a little more tailoring and shape than the oversized ones you may be used to. The style usually hits just at or above the hip bone, is slightly boxy and is collarless. Although this year, brands seem to be expanding the style and adding collars, which makes it feel more casual and a little more versatile.
Last fall, J.Crew was the first major brand to bring back the lady jacket and make it cool again. The retailer uses terms like elegant, polished and elevated to describe its array of fits — including its uber popular lady jacket sweater.
Nonetheless, other brands are making lady jackets, too. Take a look below at five lady jackets in different fabrics and fits if you’re looking for ways to incorporate the trend into your own wardrobe.
Again, J.Crew brought back the lady jacket, so it’s only fair to head to its online store first. This is its wool lady jacket, which comes in bone white, pink or navy. (FYI, the pink and navy are slightly marked down.) According to the product description, the fabric old-school wool stadium blankets inspired the fabric — it’s warm but not bulky.
Here’s another style from J.Crew with the hip-hitting, boxy cut. This one has a quilted fabric filled with PrimaLoft, a down alternative made with plastic water bottles, to keep you warm.
Keep your denim jacket around for fall, but get one in this best-selling style. This collarless denim jacket from LOFT will give any outfit a more tailored look. However, according to the product page, it runs slightly big — choose a size down if you want it to look more fitted.
Banana Republic Factory (Banana Republic’s outlet) is full of great fall finds, including this jacket. The jacket’s name indicates that it has big sleeves, but they’re not overly puffy. And unlike many other lady jacket styles, this one zips up. Get it in gray or light pink.
If you’re a flannel fan, this is this year’s girlier iteration. With puff sleeves and a cropped fit, you can’t help but pair it with bold jewelry and your favorite fall booties. Get it in blue or black plaid prints.
