Fall color is peaking in central Wisconsin, but south has a way to go

Approaching the third week of October, much of northern and central Wisconsin is at or nearing peak fall color, according to observers for Travel Wisconsin's Fall Color Report.

In the north, some spots are already at "fading peak," with color having crested, including Boulder Junction, the Cable area and the Nicolet-Wolf River Scenic Byway, according to Travel Wisconsin observers.

Conover, Manitowish Waters and Medford report 100% color.

Green Bay, at 65%, and Door County, at 45%, both expect to peak during the third week in October.

Central Wisconsin destinations suffused with changing leaf color include Shawano at 75%; Wausau, 70%; Stevens Point, 70%; Oshkosh, 65%; Appleton, Manitowoc and Marshfield, 60%; and Oshkosh, 40%. Most of those communities estimate peak color arriving during the third week in October.

Southern Wisconsin observers report a range of color penetration, with many areas still mostly green. Reports include Portage at 55%; Baraboo area, 50%; Wisconsin Dells, 45%; Madison, 40%; Lake Geneva and Washington County, 35%; Ozaukee County, 20%; Milwaukee, 15%; and Waukesha, 10%.
