Fall Beauty Trend: Embracing the High Ponytail

I went into a deep Instagram black hole after the fall 2015 Prada show back in February. I couldn’t get enough of the sleek high ponytails with bejeweled barrettes that Guido Palau sent down the runway. The style was fun, youthful, and feminine. At the time, I had just chopped my hair into a lob, so I faced the reality that this look wasn’t going to happen for me anytime soon (unless I had the help of extensions). But that didn’t stop me from obsessing over it. So when our fall beauty shoot rolled around, we put a high ponytail in the mix. I wanted to see that Prada look done for everyday — and hairstylist Deycke Heidorn delivered.

The key with this look is texture, so start by perfecting your waves. For those with naturally wavy or curly hair, Heidorn says to add a bit of leave in conditioner from the mid-shaft to ends of hair and let it hair dry or dry using a diffuser For the straight haired girls, use a medium sized curling wand to create waves and lock in the texture with a salt spray (she likes John Masters Organics Sea Mist and Redken 07 Fashion Waves) before gently combing out with a wide tooth comb.

“Once the texture is set, gently brush all the hair over your head using your fingers, creating a ponytail at the crown of your head,” she says. Place the ponytail slightly off center and secure using a fabric hair tie or a hair bungee for thicker hair. Next, wrap hair around the hair tie and secure with a bobby pin. “The more hair you wrap, the more sculptural the style becomes,” says Heidorn.

The final step is all about that last bit of texture — and it’s what makes this style slightly different from the look at Prada. “Gently massage the sides of your head to get some whispy hairs framing your face,” she says. “The overall texture should not look polished but textured.” Bejeweled barrettes are optional.
