Fall Beauty Guide: How to Wear Gloss on Your Face Without Feeling Sticky

This fall, give sticky buns some real estate on your beauty mood board. We’re borrowing some unexpected beauty inspiration from our favorite pastry and embracing all of its ooey, gooey textures. Consider this the next evolution of the dewy makeup trend. Sticky beauty looks are often passed over because of how high-maintenance they can be. But the right amount of product and some strategic placement can surprise you.

“Gloss and gooeyness is all about personal choice and comfort,” says makeup artist Mollie Gloss, clearly named to give this advice. “It doesn’t matter too much what kind you go for (whether it be lip, eye, or face gloss) but how you choose the texture will help you be more comfortable throughout the day.” Her favorite gloss to use is by Essence, and is under $5 (swoon!).

“For the face, I usually avoid using actual gloss and instead go for balm or jelly highlighters with a sheen,” explains Gloss. She recommends Westman Atelier Lit Up highlighting stick, which she says is “so good for the skin to look gooey, as it’s mostly clear and gives that wet look without the stickiness.” Another product she recommends is Incredible Cosmetics’s jelly highlighters, saying that they “give a wet appearance even when completely dried.”

Understanding your face texture is important too. Oily and combination friends, don’t write off gloss as not for you. Some advice from Mollie: “The difference between a glossy face and an oily face is all about placement. You want to hit your highlight points with dewiness, but leave specific areas of the face matte. Make sure to hit your temples, center of forehead, upper lip, the tip, and the outside of the nose with powder to balance out the shine.”

Of course, we enlisted the help of Gloss to create the slimiest, gooeyest looks that you can actually wear this season.

Just Some Straightforward Gloss on the Face:

Minimalists, this one’s for you! This is how it always starts: You try some simple gloss for your lids but end up loving how it looks so much that you apply it everywhere. For a longer-lasting look Mollie suggests, “Use primers and powders. Primer will increase your wear time by preventing your own oils from breaking it down, and a translucent powder will give a dry base for the gloss to grip onto. It’ll give you more time before the gloss starts breaking up. When applying, use a disposable wand or something you don’t mind getting sticky — like a cheap synthetic lip or foundation brush!”

More Gloss! More Glitter! More Fun!

Just because you’ve committed to the sticky texture doesn’t mean you can’t build more on top of that. We’re maximalists here so more really is more. Top off your true-blue eyeshadow with some more glitter and you’re ready to play.

Just like your favorite strawberry pink flavored candy. Add bubblegum pink to your eyelids and let your cheeks echo it as well. There’s something about a sweet pink that makes it so easily adaptable to any textures you put with it. This one’s sticky like some of our favorite sweets.

Goodbye, matte lips, we’re team #lipgloss. It’s the gateway beauty product into the sticky bun trend (yes, that’s the official term we’re using). Add some dimension with some lip liner, then slather it over your lips like you did in middle school. Lil Mama would be so proud.
