Faith Time: Staying Relevant

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Joining us this morning is Pastor Richard Ullo with Bible Baptist Church in Spanish Fort. We want to talk about a tough topic, how a pastor can be relevant without compromising. So how do you do it?

Guest: Well, you know, the times change. People change. People don’t really change a whole lot. Really, the basis of not changing is having a standard. And the standard is for a pastor and for a church is the word of God.

Anchor: So how do you feel your churches adapted to a growing community without sacrificing main tenets of your beliefs?

Guest: You know, we really try to stay in our lane. We are a conservative, traditional church, and we know what we believe. And it’s if you stay in your lane instead of the principles and of the of the word of God, it really makes a difference.

Anchor: What are, if any, areas where you’ve had to change your approach to meet the needs of your community?

Guest: You know, I have personally had to become more approachable and that was probably the hardest thing for me. I was very narrow minded and, you know, as I grew as a pastor and even as a Christian, I became a little bit more approachable and that was something that was necessary to change, to be able to reach more people.

Anchor: Let’s dig into that a little bit. When you say approachable, what did you have to change about your the ways you did things in order to be more approachable to people?

Guest: You know, probably more my demeanor and you know, you can be you, can be straightforward about things, but you don’t always have to be harsh. And sometimes pastors of more traditional standards can seem to come off a little bit more harsh. So I’ve had to learn to be approachable.
