Faith Time: Honoring mothers

MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Joining us this morning is James Johnson with NorthStone Baptist Church in Pensacola. It is Mother’s Day and we wanted to talk about the many ways mothers are lifted up in the Bible. How do you think mothers should be honored?

Guest: Well, I like to use the word honor. Children are to obey their parents. But once you become an adult, you, of course, need to honor your parents and you do it as a child, but you do it as an adult. And mothers definitely should be honored. There’s a lot of ways we could honor our moms. We could get them flowers or chocolates or things like that.

But interestingly, in the Book of Proverbs, it tells us to not forsake the law of our mother. And that is one way we can honor them, really, the best way we can honor our mom is to obey the instruction, the principles that they instilled in us when we were children. I mean, it is a heartbreaking thing for moms to see children go wayward.

There’s really no greater joy than for us to see our children walk in truth. So the best way to honor mom is to just do right.

Anchor: In what ways do you think mothers bring comfort and carry life?

Guest: Lots of ways. My wife, the mother of our children, we have three sons. She provides a lot of comfort and carries life for them, especially when it comes to, like, the day-to-day stuff. My wife is a terrific listening ear as a mom. We have college-age sons. And so you know, just their day-to-day events. She’s listening, She’s engaged. She’s signing permission slips when they’re in high school.
