There’s no denying that country music megastar Faith Hill has hit her acting stride as Margaret Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel, 1883. And while her real-life husband and co-star Tim McGraw admitted that he had to work up the nerve to ask Hill to be his on-screen wife, we’re finally hearing Hill’s side of the story. In a new interview with Food Network star Ina Garten, Hill reveals how she really felt about landing the starring role alongside her husband of more than 20 years.

“We get a call that [Taylor Sherridan] wants to write a prequel to Yellowstone called 1883. Would we be interested in playing James and Margaret Dutton? And we were like, ‘what is happening right now?’” Hill said of her and McGraw’s reactions to playing two of the show’s main characters.

The This Kiss singer continued, “We are 54 years old, and we’ve had incredible careers, our children are out of the house, and this masterpiece of a script falls in our lap out of nowhere.”

The country couple decided to take on the challenge, bringing fans the Dutton family’s story of their voyage to settle in Texas and begin the Yellowstone ranch.

Hill added that not only did she have to have the courage to represent these characters, but she had to truly learn how to be a person of the time. “What was important for Taylor is that everything that we did was so authentic, so it was important for us to learn how to ride [a horse] properly. So, we learned how to do that. I went through what he classifies as cowboy camp,” Hill said. “It’s so much fun, but it’s hard work. It’s real. I have so much respect for true cowboys and what they do and wranglers. It’s a tough, hard job. It was so much fun.” She added, “It was a grueling shoot, I will say, for all of us.”

With long days of filming and riding horses, Hill told Garten how she managed to fit in some self-care. She did this by “trying to eat properly, trying to get exercise in when you could, although sometimes the days would be so long and there was so much activity going on in a scene, that would be the exercise,” the mom of three said. “But, we also cut loose and had a great time, had fun.”

We can’t wait to see what fun—and let’s be real, dangers—are in store for Hill and McGraw as 1883 unfolds.

An additional Yellowstone prequel, 1932, starring Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford is set to premiere on Paramount+ in December. And for those that are following the original story, the newest season of Yellowstone season 5 will premiere on November 13th on Paramount Network.
