Faith briefs: Two local churches hosting concerts

New Generation Singers at the Arc Empowerment Center Monday

A Missouri teen choir will make its fifth appearance in the Mansfield area in the last decade when the New Generation Singers perform their summer sermon-in-song “L.O.V.E.” at 7 p.m. Monday at the ARC Empowerment Center, 378 Park Avenue West, Mansfield. The 75-minute worship experience features popular contemporary Christian songs, plus original creations by the 50-voice choir that draws from the St. Joseph community, just north of Kansas City.

The New G was formed in 1970 by high school choral director and barbershop chorister Byron Myers as a Christian outreach choir and has continued with tours each year.

The program will feature high energy choreography, brief testimonies and focus on scriptural themes. Their concert is in two parts — an informal section and then a more formal one. During the informal, you’ll hear solos and up-beat songs you may have heard on the radio. That's followed by the sermon-in-song, where singers tie the songs together with dialogues they wrote themselves. A freewill offering will be received.

The choir also performed at St. Luke’s Point of Grace in 2014 and 2016, at First Christian Church in 2018 and Faith United Methodist in 2021. Members of the choir are hosted overnight by local families.

New G's performance also will serve to kick off the “home stretch” for the Jericho Wall of Remembrance and Recovery, a memorial and art park on West Dickson Avenue to remember casualties of addiction and to education on the path of recovery.

Dedication of that park is set for 11 a.m. on Aug. 31 — National Drug Overdose Awareness Day.
