FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — Fairhope just got a lot brighter with the brand-new Art Alley in the heart of downtown, located off Section Street and behind the Hampton Inn.

Mayor Sherry Sullivan said the mission of the alley is to attract people to the walking area.

“We have tried to create a really safe environment day and night something that has landscaping, that’s very lighted and really featuring all the art so we can make sure people want to go there,” Sullivan said.

One resident we spoke with said the alley is a great addition to the city.

“It has this great urban opportunity with unique art,” Scott Calhoun said.

Fairhope native Hannah Legg, who helped paint the murals in the alley, told News 5 what her inspiration was.

“We sorta fell into that natural subject matter,” she said. “We did a bunch of designs, a little bit of back and forth and a little bit of tweaking and ended up landing on the Fairhope familiars is what I call the tower because they really are our local wildlife, and it’s so wonderful.”

Some of the artwork in the alley includes paintings of sea life, murals of botanical gardens and sculptures.

Legg also told News 5 what it was like using her talents in her hometown.

“It feels very cool, I have to say,” she said. “It’s weird the turnaround of growing up in Fairhope and running around those streets when I was a kid and then you know coming back and now running around down there as an adult, and see my artwork. It’s a neat way to kind of leave your mark on your hometown.”

Mayor Sherry Sullivan said there will be more paintings and murals added to this area soon and she hopes to make the alleyway a full art gallery one day.
