Fact: Girls Who Message Guys First Get More Dates

The early bird may get the worm — but proactive women get the most dates.

That’s the conclusion of a recent study conducted by dating site OkCupid, which found that ladies who reach out to men first end up meeting in person much more than when the guy makes the first move.

From a random sampling of 70,000 active OkCupid users, the site discovered that women who messaged men got 2.5 times more responses than men who did the same. What’s more, 30 percent of those first messages ultimately turned into actual dates. Only 12 percent of men’s did.

This could have something to do with the relative attractiveness of the singles being contacted: Men tend to message women who are, on average, 17 percent better looking than they are — whereas women stick to a more realistic 10 percent.

But despite these facts, traditions continue to dictate dating behavior. OkC’s stats have found that men typically send 3.5 times more first messages than women do (and often, apparently, to women who are way out of their league). And women — myself, included — carry on complaining that no cute guys ever message them. (At least now there are stats backing us up!)

A vicious cycle? Indeed. But such is modern-day dating. …
