If you’ve been on the beauty side of social media, you’ve likely heard of the benefits of double cleansing your face, A.K.A. the process of using back-to-back cleansers to give your skin a deep clean. While there are numerous facial cleansers readily available that will easily work, it’s commonly recommended to begin with a good oil-based cleanser to break down makeup, grime and any remnants of the day before proceeding into your favorite water-based formula.

As a beauty-obsessed shopping writer, I’m no stranger to double cleansing. But I recently discovered just how important getting the process right is, even on days when I don’t wear foundation or concealer— I wasn’t truly nailing double cleansing, and my facialist could tell.

During my most recent facial visit, I learned my gritty skin texture was a result of over-exfoliation (yes, there is such a thing as cleansing your face too much). My facialist recommended the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil to help revive my skin texture and softness, and I’m happy to report it really worked; my pores are no longer clogged, and my skin feels oh so supple and smooth.

What’s the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil?

At under $30, the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil is an affordable skincare option for achieving glowing skin. The Japanese oil cleanser is formulated with 100 percent organic olive oil, rosemary leaf oil, and vitamin E to maintain naturally-occurring skin oils (read: won’t strip your skin) while breaking down tough makeup.

As my lovely facialist, Tia Pinizzotto, licensed esthetician and owner of Hygee Facial Spa in Philadelphia, put it, “The reason I like the DHC cleansing oil is because it’s effective in removing dirt and makeup from the skin, it’s gentle and suitable for all skin types, and it doesn’t leave behind a greasy residue. Plus, this cleansing oil is affordable and accessible to many of my clients. If you want to add an oil cleanser to your routine, this is definitely a great one to test out.”

The best part? Even those with oily complexions can reap its benefits. “Oil attracts oil, so massaging in a light oil cleanser (like the DHC cleansing oil) will help aid in removing hardened oil stuck in the pores while giving you a much deeper clean when followed with a water based cleanser,” says Pinizzotto.

How I Tested It

On the walk home from my facial appointment, I immediately ordered the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil. The day it arrived, I planned to double cleanse my skin that night using the oil and my beloved Byoma Creamy Jelly Cleanser.  (Quick side note: because I work from home, I don’t wear foundation or concealer most days. I only double cleanse with the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil on days when I only wear my favorite skin serums and sunscreen. I prefer a thick makeup cleansing balm on heavy foundation days to really slough off the grime after a long day.)

The first time I used the cleansing oil, I massaged about three pumps of the oil into my skin, working it around my entire face. After about two minutes, I could feel the oil plugs in my pores release. As gross as it sounds, being able to feel the grime physically slough off as I massaged the oil into my skin was so satisfying.

I followed up with a water-based jelly cleanser, vitamin C serum and moisturizer. My initial impression left my skin feeling squeaky clean and ultra-moisturized—and that’s after a day of not wearing foundation. After doing this same routine for a week, my skin texture totally transformed—no joke. Not only did my skin feel less gritty, it was straight up glowing. Any red marks were less visible and signs of discoloration had faded, too.

Since my first use, I now massage the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil into my skin three to four nights per week before rinsing it off with a secondary face wash. I’m not exaggerating when I say it was the one product my skincare routine had been missing. This simple step adds valuable moisture and antioxidants back into my skin after a long day while actually removing excess sebum and impurities, which is a total win-win in my books. Beforehand, my water-based face wash felt as if it was only removing surface-level impurities. With the addition of this oil cleanser, my skin feel so much fresher.

My Final Verdict

Not only did my DHC Deep Cleansing Oil review leave me wondering why in the world it took me so long to start double cleansing with an facial oil—not just a makeup remover balm—but my skin hasn’t stopped thanking me for the added valuable moisture (and that’s coming from someone who has oily skin). Like my facialist says, “oil attracts oil,” so as long as you’re using an oil that’s recommended as a double cleanser, the results will be transformative.

Take this as your sign to add the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil to your skincare routine by snagging a bottle on Amazon for less than $20 while it’s on sale. Bye-bye, gritty skin texture. Hello, glowing skin!
