The Fabulous Fox Theatre May Have Permanent Residents from the Past

This opulent theater was designed by the famous architect Charles Howard Crane in what is often called the "Siamese-Byzantine" style. The $5 million palace opened in 1929. Although its fortunes as a movie theater would take a downturn, with The Fabulous Fox closing its doors in the late seventies, it luckily fell into the hands of devoted preservationists. They not only restored it but also expanded it, turning the St. Louis jewel into a thriving performing arts center that is suitable for Broadway productions. Despite all the updates, staff report what might be some permanent residents from the past—the scent of a cigar when no one's smoking, an apparition in one of the seats, and so on. They've also heard someone say, "Eve, take a call." (FYI, the wife of William Fox, who built the theater, was named Eve. But that is probably just a coincidence, right?)
